"Reconnue pour ses peintures narratives et figuratives qui explorent des thèmes tels que le déplacement, la nostalgie, la violence communautaire et la féminité, Nilima Sheikh s’inspire des traditions picturales asiatiques, notamment les miniatures mogholes et rajpoutes, ainsi que des peintures tempera traditionnelles comme les pichhvais et les thangkas. Après avoir obtenu une licence en histoire à l’Université de Delhi en 1965, elle poursuit des études en peinture à la Faculté des Beaux-Arts de l’Université Maharaja Sayajirao de Baroda, où elle obtient une maîtrise en 1971. Elle enseignera la peinture dans cette même institution de 1977 à 1981. En 2023, Nilima Sheikh a été nommée première “Distinguished Artist Fellow” par le Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute de l’Université Harvard, reconnaissant ainsi sa contribution significative à l’art contemporain. Nilima Sheikh continue de vivre et de travailler à Baroda, en Inde, où elle poursuit sa pratique artistique en explorant des thèmes liés à la culture, à l’histoire et à la société indiennes.

Known for her narrative and figurative paintings that explore themes such as displacement, nostalgia, communal violence and femininity, Nilima Sheikh draws inspiration from Asian painting traditions, notably Mughal and Rajput miniatures, as well as traditional tempera paintings such as pichhvais and thangkas. After obtaining a BA in History from the University of Delhi in 1965, she went on to study painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, where she obtained an MA in 1971. She taught painting at the same institution from 1977 to 1981. In 2023, Nilima Sheikh was named the first Distinguished Artist Fellow by the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University, in recognition of her significant contribution to contemporary art. Nilima Sheikh continues to live and work in Baroda, India, where she pursues her artistic practice exploring themes related to Indian culture, history and society."
