Charles Sheeler Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Photographer, b. 1883 - d. 1965

(b Philadelphia 1883; d New York City 1965) American painter and photographer. Charles Sheeler began studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1903. Around 1910 he began commercial photography while supporting himself as a painter. He became known for his stark photographs of Philadelphia’s buildings and industrial areas. Throughout his career Sheeler chose functional subjects and depicted them with sharply defined forms, capturing and abstracting existent patterns in his paintings as only a photographer could. Sheeler's ability to find beauty in the functional and create reductive images free from superlative detail spoke both to the nation's Puritan history and its industrial future, pioneering a new American aesthetic. Sheeler depicts industrial subjects as the temples of urban modernity, eliminating the unattractive side of industry and reducing it to a pristine, Utopian ideal. Indeed, many critics have regarded him as an artist whose work epitomizes a clear-eyed native, visual tradition; he has been considered a pragmatic Yankee whose no-nonsense, efficient approach to picturemaking reflects America's historic virtues. Charles Sheeler (1883 - 1965) River Rouge Construction, 1928 watercolor on paper signed and dated lower center: Sheeler 1928 Charles Sheeler was an influential American artist who used both photography and painting, which he referred to as his 'separate eyes,' to capture the function, abstraction, and the human element of the American industrial and urban age. He studied at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art from 1900 - 1902, and from there went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1903 to 1906. He became a leading figure in the Precisionist movement, which celebrated the new American landscape of skyscrapers, bridges, and factories. Subjects were reduced to their essential geometric shapes, eliminating detail, and as this untitled watercolor shows, with its upward perspective, introducing planes of light to focus on the grandeur of the worker and the steel.

SHEELER, CHARLES (1883-1965) [Leaning timbers and shadows], 1933. Gelatin silver print, likely vintage or near-vintage, 12 7/8 x 10 7/8 inches (328 x 277 mm), on slightly larger sheet, signed and dated in pencil on verso. The print with some cockling, three or four small hard creases, tape adhered to the back of the print on all four sides from an old mount. Done during the time that Sheeler was represented by Edith Halpert at her Downtown Gallery in New York, this composition (which we do not find recorded elsewhere) exhibits the strong diagonals and play of light and shadow that are apparent in some of his best work of the period. The print does not appear to fluoresce under ultra-violet, and we believe it to be vintage. C

              Charles Sheeler Signed two-sided painting

              Est: $500 - $10,000

signed Charles Sheeler "Gravel Pit," watercolor and gouache on paper, with rough sketch painting on verso, signed "Sheeler" lower right, 11.25"h x 14.5"w approx. It is framed ain a manner so works visible on both sides.  in good condition.  Sheeler traveled often to New York and began developing important relationships with dealers and collectors there and exhibiting in group shows, including the 1913 Armory Show. He was introduced to Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864 - 1946), who admired his Doylestown photos and encouraged Sheeler to reevaluate his notions about photography and explore it as a valid artistic medium. He also met the art collectors Walter and Louise Arensberg, who introduced him to the artists and intellectuals in their circle, including Marcel Duchamp (American, born France, 1887 - 1968) and Man Ray (American, 1890 - 1976). In 1919 Sheeler moved to New York. The following year he collaborated with the photographer Paul Strand (American, 1890 - 1976) on the short film Manhatta, an avant-garde project that sought to apply techniques of still photography to a motion picture. Throughout the 1920s, Sheeler achieved both critical and financial success as a commercial photographer. In 1926 he was hired by Edward Steichen (American, 1879 - 1973) to work for Condé Nast publications, producing fashion and celebrity photographs for the magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair. One of the turning points in Sheeler’s career came the following year, when the Ford Motor Company hired him to photograph the company’s River Rouge Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Sheeler’s stark, stylized images of the factory complex won him critical acclaim and were widely reproduced as icons of American industry. That same year Sheeler and his wife Katharine moved to South Salem, a small town outside of New York. In 1931, the dealer Edith Halpert offered Sheeler exclusive representation at her Downtown Gallery in New York. She encouraged him to curtail his work in photography and focus his artistic energies on painting instead. Following a solo show at the Downtown Gallery, Sheeler promptly resigned from Condé Nast and turned his artistic attention toward oil, conté crayon, and tempera. Beginning in the late 1920s, Sheeler’s paintings and drawings appeared in important exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Arts Club of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. His work entered the collections of many of these institutions, as well as those of important collectors of American modernism, including the Arensbergs, Duncan Phillips, and Ferdinand Howland.
