Belfast born illustrator Elizabeth Shaw studied at the Chelsea College of Art before working as an illustrator and cartoonist for Our Time and Lilliput. In 1946 she moved to East Germany with her Swiss husband, Rene Graetz. For the next twenty years she co-edited Das Magazin, which published the work of avant-garde artists and writers. She also wrote and illustrated children's books, and illustrated Brecht's poems for children. Shaw occasionally returned to Ireland and in 1979 had an exhibition in the Arts Council Gallery in Belfast. Two years later she was awarded the Kathe Kollwitz Prize, and in 1990 her memoirs, Irish Berlin, appeared in German.
