Wilde (Oscar).- Shannon (Charles) Autograph Letter signed to John Lane, The Vale, Chelsea, [1893]; along with 2 others autograph items relating to publication (3)

        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Wilde (Oscar).- Shannon (Charles) Autograph Letter signed to John Lane, 2pp., commencing "Oscar called tonight" and regarding the binding format and pricing for Lady Windermere's Fan and The Portrait of Mr. W.H. as agreed and discussed with Oscar Wilde, The Vale, Chelsea, [1893], folds, hole-punched at head, staple holes to foot; and 2 others comprising an autograph draft listing of Wilde's books on the reverse of a Mathews and Lane order form in an unknown hand and a 2pp. rough draft of a contract with Wilde for Lady Windermere's Fan, The Duchess of Padua, A Woman of No Importance and Mr W.H., possibly in Elkin Mathews' hand, 8vo & 4to (3) *** A superb letter from Shannon that demonstrates the detailed and exacting interest Wilde took in the publication of his works along with the significant influence of Shannon and Ricketts on format and pricing. Shannon in the letter states that Wilde has been persuaded to alter the pricing of W.H., but that with regards to the plays "Oscar is averse to the idea of their all being bound in the same cover", a stance that Wilde would later abandon. Shannon also discusses taking the material for Lady Windermere to Ballantyne, his preferred printer.  The accompanying items show the beginnings of what would become the formalised agreement between the publishers, the involvement of Shannon and Ricketts in the publications is repeatedly specified in both drafts.

Provenance: With Peter Nahum Ltd, London [no.169].; Where purchased by the present owner. Exhibited: London, J.S. Maas & Co., 'Pre-Raphaelites and their Contemporaries', 1961, no.94.; London, J.S. Maas & Co., 'Pre-Raphaelites to Post-Impressionists', 1965. Note: The woman’s full skirted and sleeved dresses in the present work correspond, not with the contemporary fashions of the 1890s, but with the Pre-Raphaelite clothing of the earlier mid-Victorian years of around the 1860s. It echoes in particular Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s drawings of Elizabeth Siddal, which Shannon so admired. The drawing further pays homage to Antoine Watteau, most strikingly in its three-colour chalk technique as well as in its delicate composition. Indeed, the [Charles] Ricketts and Shannon Collection, today principally housed in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, contained at least five drawings by Watteau, attesting to Shannon's interest in and admiration for the earlier French painter and draughtsman. An original lithograph on wove paper by English artist Charles Haslewood Shannon (1863-1937) titled "La Maree Montante (The Rising Tide)", 1909. Issued unsigned though signed in the plate lower right. Printed and published by Gazette Des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France in 1909. Printed in one color in sanguine. Reference: Sanchez & Seydoux 1909-13; Derry 83. Sheet size: 10.5" x 7". Image size: 8.75" x 6.5". In excellent condition. This lithograph was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.Charles Haslewood Shannon, (26 April 1863 – 18 March 1937), the English artist, was born at Sleaford in Lincolnshire, the son of the Rev. Frederick William Shannon, Rector of Quarrington. Shannon attended the City and Guilds of London Art School and was subsequently considerably influenced by his lifetime partner Charles Ricketts and by the example of the great Venetians. In his early work, he was addicted to a heavy low tone, which he abandoned subsequently for dearer and more transparent color. He achieved great success with his portraits and his Giorgionesque figure compositions, which are marked by a classic sense of style, and with his etchings and lithographic designs. Several of his portrait works are on display in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Complete sets of his lithographs and etchings have been acquired by the British Museum and the Berlin and Dresden print rooms. He was awarded a first-class gold medal at Munich in 1895 and a first-class silver medal in Paris in 1900. He was a member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers. Shannon became disabled in 1928 after a fall while hanging a picture, and the neurological damage that resulted caused amnesia and ended his career.
