      Aileen Phillips Shannon (American, 1888-1964). "Natchez, Mississippi" oil on canvas, 1925. Signed at lower right. A picturesque landscape painted by Aileen Phillips Shannon in 1924. Shannon invites the viewer into the breathtaking view of Natchez, Mississippi via a curved road at the lower left of the composition. To one side of the road are a pair of leafy deciduous trees, while to the right of the road, a blonde woman dressed in a white blouse and a long blue skirt stands before a charming house, peering out at the natural expanse of boulders, tall trees, and golden shrubbery. The Mississippi River with a lone sailboat gliding along the waters graces the middle ground. Finally, a few more homes dot both sides of the riverbank and majestic hillsides rise in the distance toward the serene azure skies and billowing clouds above. All is mounted in an attractive custom frame. She left the country in 1908 to study abroad in Antwerp and Paris. Upon her return, Shannon studied in Chicago as well as Taxco, Mexico where she took portrait classes with Wayman Adams. By 1910. Shannon had returned to Mississippi, established her own studio, and began offering private art lessons. In addition, she became a founding member as well as the treasurer and three time president of the Mississippi Art Association.
