    Ben Shahn (American, 1898-1969), 1968, lithograph on paper poster depicting a man with his hands near his face, inscribed "You Have Not Converted A Man Because You Have Silenced Him. (John, Viscount Morley, On Compromise, 1874)." Together with a Sunday Evening with SNCC program designed by Shahn. The event took place on April 25, 1965 at the New York Hilton. The program included Harry Belafonte, Marlon Brando, Diahann Carroll, Louis Gossett, Elaine May, and Mike Nichols, Nana Mouskouri, Sidney Poitier, and Barbra Streisand. Shahn also did the cover art for Pete Seeger's 1958 album, Love Songs for Friends & Foes (Folkways Records, 1956).

Paper size is 7 x 15.25 inches, with an image size of 7 x 15.25 inches. The Lithograph is from an edition size of 250 and is not framed. The condition was rated Good Condition, with signs of handling or age. Additional details: some wear on corners and image bleed. From Hallelujah, book of 24 lithographs published by Kennedy Graphics, Mourlot Graphics, New-York. These are recognized as Shahn's last body of work. Named one of the Ten Best Artists by then-popular Look magazine in 1948 and renowned for his anguished, searingly bold imagery, artist and activist Ben Shahn protested against social injustice and honored ordinary people in lithographs, paintings, photographs, and public murals. For Shahn, art was a powerful tool for sociopolitical commentary and for urging and effecting change. As he asserted: If we are to have values, a spiritual life and a culture, these things must find the imagery and interpretations through the arts.

    Ben Shahn (Lithuanian 1898-1969) Frederick Douglass (1965) signed and dedicated in pencil 'for Bertrand Russell - Ben Shahn' (lower centre), additionally signed in pen by Bertrand Russell (lower left), lithograph, image 57 x 44 cm, framed and glazed, 71.5 x 58 cm Provenance Donated to the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation by the artist. Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was an American social reformer, abolitionist and writer. Shahn gave permission to the Museum of African Art in Washington to reproduce and sell a portfolio of his portraits of Douglass to benefit the museum's Frederick Douglass Institution of Negro Arts and History. In January 1966, Russell wrote to Shahn thanking him for his generous donation, adding 'my only regret is that they will be sold in support of our work, for I admire them very much.'
