From Hallelujah, book of 24 lithographs published by Kennedy Graphics, Mourlot Graphics, New-York. These are recognized as Shahn's last body of work. Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was an American social reformer, abolitionist and writer. Shahn gave permission to the Museum of African Art in Washington to reproduce and sell a portfolio of his portraits of Douglass to benefit the museum's Frederick Douglass Institution of Negro Arts and History. In January 1966, Russell wrote to Shahn thanking him for his generous donation, adding 'my only regret is that they will be sold in support of our work, for I admire them very much.'
