Presented is a WWI patriotic poster advertising the liberty loan. It was created by L.A. Shafer and published in 1918 by the W.F. Litho. Co. out of New York. Shafter has signed the piece in the lithographic stone, with the signature at bottom right. The poster was printed for the fifth and final liberty loan, known as the Victory Liberty Loan. The poster reads: "They kept the sea lanes open / Invest in the Victory Liberty Loan." This war effort poster is a symbol of the Navy's efforts to keep the oceans and sea lanes open to secure them for American troops and transportation. The sea lanes were crucial for transportation of supplies to Europe during World War I. The German U-boats struck terror in all the convoys, but the propaganda campaigns would be a turnaround in the War by pulling in more money to the Army and Navy.
