The sketchbooks of William Shackleton, 1903-1952, an archive of approximately 150 sketchbooks containing some 5,000 sketches, the books in a numbered sequence from no. 1, dated 1903, shortly after he started his career as a full-time artist, to no. 149, dated 1952, shortly before his death, a few gaps in the numbering sequence, lacking nos. 9, 14, 16, 109, 11 and 141, but with 7 further sketchbooks with paper cover lacking or where writing on the cover is illegible, mostly pencil drawings reflecting the whole range of his artistic interests, including landscapes and portraits, many presumably preliminary drawings for more substantial works, each volume with approx. 20/40 pages, with one or more sketches per page, many drawings with textual information added by the artist in pencil, each sketchbook approx. 22 x 14 cm QTY: (a carton) NOTE: William Shackleton was born and worked in Bradford. He exhibited extensively in the North of England where his pictures are held in numerous public galleries. He also represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1910 and 1922. Provenance: Artist’s studio sale June 2018.

        WILLIAM SHACKLETON (BRITISH 1872-1933) Study for the Island of dreams signed and titled (on the reverse) oil on canvas 35.5 x 46 cm William Shackleton, portrait and landscape painter, born in Bradford. In 1893 he won a scholarship to study at the National Art Training School (later renamed The Royal College of Art), in 1896 he gained a British Institute Scholarship, enabling him to study in Paris and in Italy. On returning to London he took a studio with Philip Connard, the decorative and portrait painter, in Chelsea. After 1914 he moved to Malham, Yorkshire, which became the subject of his later landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, amongst others. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1910 and again in 1922. His work was influenced by the work of Turner and integrated Turner’s colour ideas into his own, often impressionist and a self-confessed symbolist work.

        CARVING THE WAR MEMORIAL: THE STONEYARD AT PUTNEY BRIDGE Signed and dated 1923 oil and gouache on board 25.5 x 22cm Provenance: Abbot and Holder, List No 358, March 2004, no 181 Shackleton was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and studied at Bradford Technical College before gaining a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1893. In 1896 he won a British Institute Scholarship which allowed him to study in Paris, at the Academy Julian, and in Italy where he was inspired by Renaissance art. On his return he settled in London but also painted in Sussex with his friend Edward Stott. A self-confessed symbolist, outside the mainstream of twentieth century British art, he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1895-1919 and with the New English Art Club from 1899.
