"The colossal landscape is rarely seen in John Sexton's work. The images of great spaces made by Watkins and O'Sullivan are concerned with surveying; they are about political and spiritual ownership, or even about transcendence of the particular. But John Sexton arrives at the same places with a different message and for another purpose. One can see Sexton, prowling river banks, valley marshes, and the corners of open fields, looking for poetic confirmations of texture and dappled light with an armature of structure to hold the idea together. Sexton composes on a human scale. He generally works within a space that a person could pace off in a few minutes. These are intimacies, places of resonance, and havens for poetic revelation." Byers greatly admired this image by his friend, as he later included it in the Message from West Coast portfolio, published by PGI Gallery in Japan. From the collection of Robert K. "Sandstone Narrows" by John Sexton

John Sexton (American, b. 1953). A silver gelatin photograph, signed and numbered 38/200 in margin, with photographer's label to verso; 9.5" x 13". Sexton worked for Ansel Adams from 1979 to 1984 (when Adams died), first as Technical and Photographic Assistant, then as Technical Consultant. Sexton served as Special Projects Consultant to the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust following Adams' death. Sexton has taught at numerous photographic workshops in the past, and continues to do so, with his wife Anne Larsen, a talented photographer in her own right, through his long-running eponymous fine art photography workshop program. For many years he was a co-director of the Owens Valley Photography Workshops with fellow co-directors Bruce Barnbaum and Ray McSavaney.

John Sexton. "White Branch, Merced River, Yosemite Valley, California." 10 x 13 inch gelatin silver print on a 15 x 18 inch mount. Signed and dated in light pencil beneath the print. Sexton's stamp on the back of the mount has the title and the dates written in pen, 1974, printed 1981. The range of tones from dark to mid to blinding white is striking.
