AMOS SEWELL (1901-1983) The Sheriff's cast off. Illustration for an unidentified story. Tempera and gouache on board. 530x790 mm; 21x31 inches, on 27 1/2x38-inch board. Signed "Amos Sewell" in lower right image. Based on the scene depicted and the name "Ellenita" on the lifeboat's hull, it is most certainly for the true but often hyperbolically retold story about the notorious Captain William Henry "Bully" Hayes and the Pacific ship he fraudulently seized in 1859. As the tale goes, the wily Hayes smuggled goods onto the Ellenita, a Tahiti-bound vessel at a port of call in Maui. Aware of the suspicions of the local Sheriff Treadway, Hayes invited him aboard the ship to satisfy himself that no contraband existed. He then proceeded to ply him with liquor, weighed anchor, and sailed out far enough before forcing the drunken Treadway into the lifeboat to row himself back to shore. The sheriff was the lucky one in the end as the Ellenita sank off the shores of the Navigator Islands, though the unstoppable Hayes survived to terrorize the seas again.

As with many examples of classic Golden Age Illustration, the backstory behind The Surprise Party is as interesting as the work itself: The present owner's father met Amos Sewell when he was just ten years old. At the time, the young boy went door to door in New York City, in an attempt to raise funds for his class' surprise party, being thrown for their very pregnant teacher. This was the second party that the class attempted to organize, as on their first try, the teacher had called out sick. The young boy explained the situation to his neighbor, Sewell. The artist loved the story so much, he used it as a basis for this illustration. Subsequently Sewell gifted the work to the owner's father. The present work was published in The Saturday Evening Post posthumously in 1990. A copy of the magazine accompanies this lot. HID01801242017

Very good condition with some marks and stains on the back. Total weight is a little under half a pound.

Amos Sewell and his wife Ruth lived in the consignor's great-grandparents' home in Westport, Connecticut. The artist was a good friend of their family, who still lived on property across the street. Family members modeled for him, and Sewell also used scenes of their farm as backgrounds in his illustrations.
