      Portrait of Candace Catherine Stimson (1869-1930) Signed upper left 'A Brewster' Dated upper right '1884'. Oil on canvas. 21 1/4 x 17 in. Notes: Candace Catherine Stimson's brother was Henry Stimson, Secretary of War under President Taft, then Secretary of State under President Hoover, and again Secretary of War, but under President F. D. Roosevelt. Her aunt is Dora Wheeler, student and close friend of William Merritt Chase, who painted the iconic portrait of Dora (Cleveland Museum) Her grandmother is Candace Wheeler, designer and business partner of L.C. Tiffany and Lockwood deForest.

      Amanda Sewell (New York, 1859 - 1926) portrait of a young girl seated holding a nest of birds. Signed lower left. Oil on canvas. Sight size: 29 x 24 inches. Lydia Amanda Brewster Sewell studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and William Sartain at the Art Students League. She also studied in Paris, France with William Bouguereau, Charles Emile Carolus-Duran and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. Sewell's career was based in New York City, where she was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1903. Born in Essex County, New York in North Elba in 1859, Sewell exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1888 and 1903; and many of the expositions of the day, including the Columbian, Chicago, Illinois, in 1893, where she won a medal; Pan-American, Buffalo, New York, 1901; Charleston, in South Carolina, 1902; and the St. Louis, in Missouri, 1904.

L.I. just before or just after W.W.I./P.J. S... 9/82, Melbourne Oil on canvas laid to panel 24 x 29 1/8 inches Scattered craquelure. Dirty varnish. Frame rubbing. Restored in 1982. The inscription on the backing appears to have been written by the conservator copying what was written on the back of the canvas. Scattered inpainting along the edges and a few scattered spots at the bottom. Unable to detect further restoration.

Craquelure throughout the entire work and very dirty and yellowed varnish; very good, thick impasto. Under UV light: very small spots of inpainting throughout, predominantly on the waves in the lower half, where some flakes of paint loss have been retouched. We are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described in our catalogue.
