Framed & Signed Mid-20th C Severini Still Life Painting

      Est: $9,000 - $13,500

Federico Severini (Italian, 1888-1962), "Fiori", oil on canvas, signed "F. Severini" lower right, ca. 1940's to 1950's. An exceedingly fine still life painting depicting two vases filled with roses and African Violets by Federigo Severini - an Italian painter of landscapes, architecture, and portraits - as well as still-lifes. The beautiful composition is set in a gilded frame that perfectly suits it. Size: 16.75" W x 12" H (42.5 cm x 30.5 cm) Born in Pisa in the late 19th century, Severini began painting when he was only 10 years old. With the support and encouragement of his father - a lawyer who was entrenched in cultural activities in Pisa - and family friend Giulio Luperini, who was an artist, professor, and conservator, Severini blossomed. Interestingly, he pursued degrees in mathematics and engineering, and became assistant to the Chairman of the University of Pisa’s Architecture school, Vincenzo Pilotti before pursuing art professionally. Severini once admirably said, "I paint for the pleasure to paint, without pretension to collect admiration or to catch up material advantages." While teaching, Severini continued to pursue his art - painting portraits, still-lifes, and landscapes. The year 1930 marked the painter’s public debut, and he enjoyed success with the Sindacato Artisti e Professionisti. In 1932, he had is first solo exhibition at the Palazzo "alla Giornata" di Pisa. In 1942, he became a professor of Design and Composition in Architecture at the University of Pisa. During his tenure in the 1940's and 1950's, Severini artistic pursuits intensified. He especially favored landscapes of his favorite places such as Bocca d’Arno, Marina di Pisa, and San Rossore and participated in several solo as well as group exhibitions. Following his death, numerous retrospective exhibitions were dedicated to his oeuvre. In addition, several buildings were dedicated to him, including the Museum of San Matteo in Pisa and Palazza Braschi in Rome.
