Vind." within the title cartouche lower left, inscription in an unknown hand in pencil above the depiction upper left. Numbered "29" verso. Date: 1750 Description: Very decorative copper engraving map of Lorraine; with old surface colouring, at lower left the elaborately designed title cartouche with coats of arms and figures hunting and making wine and cheese; at lower right the mileage indicator with putto making maps, with clobus. Also shows the Saarland in the north. Matthäus Seutter (1678 - 1756) was an engraver, cartographer and founder of the Seutter printing and publishing house in Augsburg. In 1731/32, Seutter was awarded the title "Sacrae Caesareae Maiestatis Geographus", i.e. Imperial Geographer, by Emperor Charles VI, which appears on our map in the abbreviation S.C.M.. This exceptional folio map is from Georg Matthaeus Seutter's Atlas novus sive Tabulae geographicae totius orbis faciem... The atlas was published in Augsburg circa 1732 to 1741. Georg Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757) was one of the most important German mapmakers of the eighteenth century. Born in Augsburg in 1678, he became an apprentice to the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. In 1707 he established himself as a map publisher in Augsburg, and quickly became Homann's main rival. His business flourished and by 1731 he was appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court.

Accompanied on the same sheet with a large map of the region from Charleston, South Carolina in the north to Saint Augustine, Florida, with a smaller inset of Jekyll Island and St. Simon's Island and a detail inset of the town's saw mill operation on the Savannah River. ONE OF THE EARLIEST OBTAINABLE COLONIAL GEORGIA MAPS: THE SALZBURGER COLONY. The Salzburgers were a group of Protestant refugees from the Archbishopric of Salzburg (modern-day Austria) who fled religious persecution in the early 18th century. In 1734, they were invited by King George II of England to settle in the new colony of Georgia. Led by Pastor Johann Martin Boltzius, they established the town of Ebenezer near Savannah. Despite initial hardships, they built a prosperous community, focusing on agriculture, particularly silk production. During the Revolutionary War, the town was burned down by British forces and eventually abandoned in 1855 and never fully recovered. Cumming 265. This lot is located in Chicago. A large inset at bottom center depicts the port and city of Mahon on the island of Menorca, with a lettered key identifying numerous locations. At bottom right is an inset showing the location of the Balearic islands in relation to Spain and the Mediterranean. This large and boldly engraved map centers on St. Polten and details Lower Austria along the course of the Danube River. The map extends as far south as Pinkafeld and west to Enns and Steyr. Excellent detail features the mountains, forests, rivers, roads, villages, and fortified cities. The large and very decorative allegorical cartouche is surrounded with cherubs, putti, a river god, and a coat of arms.
