Oil on canvas Prague, Czech Republic, circa 1920 Jaroslav Setelik (1881-1955) - Czech painter Signed 'Jaroslav Setelik' lower left Elegant frame Overall dimensions, framed: 104 x 150 cm Provenance: Private collection Hesse Romantic, delicately colored city view in large format; Setelik's panoramas of Prague fetch over 11,000 euros at international auctions This work by Jaroslav Setelik immediately fascinates due to its large format. Here the Czech artist represented one of his favorite motifs - the city of Prague. Setelik created many panoramas of this kind, seen from different viewpoints. In the present painting the river Moldova runs in the foreground, partly hidden behind some trees. In the center of the image thrones the Prague Castle on the Hradcany below a cloudy sky. The composition features a delicate color scheme. The outlines of the castle and its surroundings, immersed in soft light, are rendered in soft hues. Skillfully Setelik created a harmonious sense of perspective. The painting is in good condition. There is craquelure in the upper area of the sky and above the lower edge. On the right there is a small stain and a fine surface scratch to the sky. The edges show some minor abrasions due to rubbing of the framing. The canvas is partly torn along the upper edge due to tension, however this is hidden by the frame. The picture is signed lower left 'Jaroslav Setelik'. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 104 x 150 cm, the stretcher frame measures 83 x 131 cm. Jaroslav Setelik (1881-1955) Jaroslav Setelik was initially trained by the landscape painter Ferdinand Engelmüller. He spent a short period in Munich, but then returned to Prague in order to devote himself to painting.
