Jose Maria De Servin (1912-1983) Mexican, Oil Painting on Burlap. Depicts a stylized wide-eyed Mexican girl dancing. Signed upper right.  Condition: Commensurate with age.  Overall Size: 34 1/4 x 26 1/4 in.  Sight Size: 26 x 17 3/4 in.  #6 #4056 .  Jose Maria de Servin was born in Michigan in 1912, but his family moved to Guadalajara, Mexico when he was only two months old. The family followed work, but a particularly rough period of weather and health issues led them to stay in Mexico for much of de Servin’s childhood. He grew up to become a prominent member of the “Young Painters of Jalisco” group, first studying at the Mexico School of Open-Air Painting, a free art institution sponsored by the government. Although he first studied with Jose Vizcarra, he mainly worked under Chucho Reyes, whose improvisational watercolors incorporating traditional Mexican themes had a profound influence on de Servin’s art. By the early 1930s he was recognized for his work on unconventional materials, such as painting on burlap or corn husk, and for his modernist reimaginings of classic Mexican folk art, incorporating styles from artists like Picasso and other cubists. In 1934 de Servin collaborated with Jose Clemente Orozco on murals and other works that were shown in the Legislative Palace of Guadalajara, which led him to a lifelong fascination with large scale art and many murals painted jointly with his brothers, Antonio and Miguel. He taught summer art courses for 15 years at the University of Arizona, and had many solo shows in North America as well as Europe. He died in 1983, and his work continues to fascinate collectors and artists who have begun to explore the folk art and the influence his unique style had on the Jalisco scene, as well as the rest of Central America.

              Aug. 31, 2024

ATTR TO SOO PIENG CHEONG CHINESE NUDE OIL PAINTING

              Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Soo Pieng Cheong, Chinese, 1917 to 1983, an oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a seated semi nude woman in a bird in a landscape, 1978. Signed with Calligraphy, lower left. Framed. Additionally signed in Latin, and dated, on the backside. Soo Cheong is known for Abstract marine, landscape and figure painting and ink drawing. Iconic and innovative Singaporean artist Cheong Soo Pieng is famous for his Nanyang paintings and pioneering efforts in that style, however his subjects and styles actually spanned the artistic spectrum from realist to abstract. Furthermore, other styles he practiced were difficult to place on the spectrum because they were the result of his constant experimentation and use of new media, such as metal installations, wood, and cloth, to create his own unique styles. His methods mirrored his dual Western and Eastern educations and the melting pot of cultures and influences he witnessed while living in China and Southeast Asia. He made a profound impact on Singaporean modern art in a short time period due to his ability to learn many different styles throughout his career. One of a kind artwork.

              Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Signed upper right. JOSE MARIA DE SERVIN (Guadalajara, Mexico, b. 1917, d. 1995). The sweetness that characterizes the work of Mexican painter Jose Maria de Servin (1917-83) is a melancholy and placid one. While he worked in the most modern of styles, he adapted it to an anecdotal folk-art approach distinctly his own. An influence of critical importance to de Servin was Pablo Picasso. One of the originators of Cubism, the Spanish painter soon departed from its quasi-scientific and optical basis to create lively and humorous geometrical abstractions. It was this Cubism, personal and decorative, that de Servin adopted. His earliest Cubist works mimic Picasso, while during the second stage of his career, his works become smooth and polished, with an emphasis on gentle surface textures. Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Small votive head from Etruscan culture, 4th century BC. Terracotta. Good condition. Provenance: Edward Wigan 1966, Ex Denys Sutton, London (1917-1991) / Netherlands, by descent 1983 by inheritance to present owner (2010). Measurements: 14 x 10 cm. Female head of votive character that maintains the frontality usual in some Etruscan works of art and some details that slightly remind us of Greek works. This is an example of the sculptural art of the Etruscan culture, which in Antiquity was already surrounded by an aura of mystery; even their Greek contemporaries were intrigued by the sudden emergence of this people as a maritime and commercial power, by this ancient people who, according to Dionysius of Halicarnassus, "resemble no other in their language and customs". While some consider them to be the people who gave rise to the Roman Empire, there are other experts who give more importance to the differences between the two peoples and consider them to be mere neighbours or "conqueror and conquered", depending on the period in which one speaks, recognising a strong influence of some elements of Etruscan culture and art observed in the Romans. In any case, the Etruscans were great artists and craftsmen, known for what has come down to us from them: profusely decorated and very striking tombs, resembling homes in some cases; terracotta sculptures which they apparently polychromed with flat, bright tones (similar to ancient Egyptian works), and used to decorate temples, as sculptures etc.; goldsmiths, ceramics, etc. Etruscan art was heavily influenced by Greek art from its beginnings, due to the cultural connection between the two peoples throughout the history of Etruscan culture. This influence was combined with that of Eastern origin and, from the 1st century BC onwards, with Roman influence. However, it was mainly Asian and Greek influences that determined the development of Etruscan art. On this basis, Etruscan art developed its own style, marked by a taste for stylisation and lively colour. One of its main sculptural manifestations will be the portrait, which will have a primarily funerary purpose, given that in Etruscan culture funeral rites and iconography will play a key role. However, there are also some examples of commemorative portraiture, such as the bronze head of Lucius Junius Brutus (c. 300 BC), the legendary first consul of the Roman Republic. The Etruscan portrait is not a simple copy of the Greek, but an original creation combining serenity and passion, a direct ancestor of the Roman portrait.
