English painter John Thomas Serres was born in London in December 1759. He was the eldest son of Dominic (1722-93), a successful marine painter who was to be one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. John was taught by his father and later they published their Liber Nauticus, a handbook of instructions for marine painters. Serres' marine painting background gave him an opening and he had soon established a recognized and successful painting practice. From 1780 to 1825 he is said to have exhibited more than 100 works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He was a fine draughtsman and gained the prestigious appointment of Master of Drawing at the Royal Naval College in Chelsea. In 1790 and 1791 he toured France and Italy, ending at Naples. At his father's death in 1793 he was made Marine Painter to the King, while in 1800 he became Marine Draughtsman to the Admiralty. The ensuing coastal voyages around Britain, France and Spain, and into the Mediterranean, resulted in an illustrated publication The Little Sea Torch (1801). This large scale painting depicts a British man of war in a busy Bay of Naples. Serres visited this famous city on at least two occasions, in 1791 and again in 1800-1801. Although its luster had dimmed slightly compared to its glory days on the "grand tour" in the 18th century, it was still a vibrant and sophisticated city with an ever changing political scene. Vesuvius had a string of intermittent eruptions during this period, one of which is depicted in the painting.

The guide had 127 hand-colored aquatint plates after J. T. Serres, a list of subscribers, a table of soundings, and an index. Plate 11 contains six vignette views depicting various lighthouses and entrances to harbours around Europe including England, Italy, and France, two of which are hand-coloured (4.25 x 7.25 ins) and four tinted (4.25 x 3.5 ins).

John Thomas Serres (born in London 1759) was the eldest son of French-born painter and founding member of the Royal Academy, Dominic Serres R.A. (1722–1793). John Serres studied under his father and would go on to publish the Liber Nauticus, the foundational textbook for marine painters of the day. He had a thriving practise and is said to have exhibited more than 100 works at the R.A. and British Institution. After his father's death in 1793, John was appointed the Marine Painter to King George III. In 1800 he became Marine Draughtsman to the Admiralty and embarked on coastal voyages around Britain, France, Spain and the Mediterranean which resulted in the publication of The Little Sea Torch in 1801. This wonderful topographical portrayal of Lambeth Palace, with the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral reaching above the London skyline in the distance, is an excellent example of Serres’ work. William Clement Finch (1753-1794), son of Heneage, 3rd Earl of Aylesford, and thence by family descent at Packington Hall, Warwickshire Other Notes: The Amazon was the second vessel of this name, a 32-gun frigate which was launched on the Thames in 1773. She weighed 687 tons and carried a crew of 220 men. She was commanded by the Hon. William Clement Finch (1753-1794). William Finch was the third son of Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Aylesford, and his wife, Lady Charlotte Seymour, daughter of 6th Duke of Somerset. There was a strong naval pedigree in the family - William Finch was the great-grandson of Daniel Finch, 8th Earl of Winchilsea, who served as First Lord of the Admiralty. William became a Lieutenant in 1772, a Commander in 1776, and a Captain in 1777. He finally reached the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Blue in 1794. The second and third compositions depict the Amazon caught in a disastrous hurricane which swept across the West Indies in 1780. The British Navy lost thirteen vessels in this storm, and the coastal fortifications on some of the islands suffered severe damage. John Thomas Serres was born in London in 1759 to Dominic Serres, a prominent painter and a founder of the Royal Academy. Instructed by his father, John was involved in the publication of the maritime painter's guide, 'Liber Nauticus', and he soon developed a successful independent painting career - the Royal Academy and British Institution exhibiting over 100 of his paintings over his lifetime. He also became Master of Drawing at the Royal Naval College in Chelsea and in 1793 was made Marine Painter to the King after his father's death. Serres' successful career was badly damaged in the early 19th century by the activities of his wife, Olivia Serres, who came to believe that she was the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Cumberland and publicly pressed her "claim" to his estate, insisting on being addressed as "Princess Olive of Cumberland". Consequently, out of favour at court, Serres was forced to attempt to recoup his losses by investing in the theatre, setting up the Royal Coburg Theatre in 1818. This eventually became known as the "Old Vic". However, his wife's activities again ruined him and he died in 1825 in a London debtors' prison.

The Coast of Barbary, from Cape Bon to Cape de Verd. Together with... SERRES, John Thomas, (1759-1825). London: J. Debrett, 1801. Folio (16 4/8 x 11 inches). 20 leaves with 138 fine aquatint coastal profiles and views, all with original hand-colour, 24 engraved charts on 12 sheets, all with original hand-colour in full (some toning). Modern half calf, marbled paper boards, antique. First and only edition of this charming coasting pilot, translated from Rene Bougard's "Le Petit de la Mer" of 1810. Serres, who most famously painted "The Thames at Limehouse", had a distinguished career as marine painter to George III, in which position he succeeded his father, and to the duke of Clarence. He was an official draughtsman to the Admiralty, and as such "Serres was frequently absent from home, for as much as six months in 1800 when he was actually on sea service. He made 'drawings in the form of elevations' of the coasts of France and Spain, a selection of which were published in 'The Little Sea Torch' (1801) [as here]. He taught drawing at the [short-lived] Chelsea Naval School and in 1805 published, under joint authorship with his father, 'Liber nauticus, and Instructor in the Art of Marine Drawing', a work intended to assist his students which contained plates after his own work and that of his father. In his absence, his wife committed numerous infidelities, and several frauds, which included forging her husband's name on bank drafts to the extent that Serres became a declared bankrupt. In 1802 a separation was mutually agreed, trusteeship for the daughters being invested, inter alia, in Olivia's current lover. In 1804 Serres abducted one of the daughters, for which he was charged by the trustees with breaching the trust and consigned to prison. Olivia evidently pursued her artist's career, since in 1806, two years before Serres's release from prison, she was appointed landscape painter to the prince of Wales (D. D. Aldridge).
