Richard Serra American, (1939 - 2024) Hreppholar VIII, 1991 intaglio construction in black on Fuji Kozo and Meirat Velasquez handmade papers Pencil signed and dated lower right. Edition 14/35. 1991 blindstamp lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Known for large-scale steel sculpture of geometric designs, Richard Serra has created site-specific pieces that make three-dimensional designs in space. He has also made wall reliefs and floor sculpture from flexible materials that suggest organic shapes. He is committed to the idea of utilizing quality materials and to the concept that process is as important as the final result. Serra was born in San Francisco and attended college at Berkeley and Santa Barbara, majoring in English Literature. He studied art at Yale University, earning a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in 1964. There he worked with Josef Albers and came into contact with many leading artists of the New York School (Abstract Expressionists). He also had a job working in a steel plant, which had lasting influence on his career. On a Fulbright Scholarship, he studied in France and Italy. In 1977, he married Clara Wyergraf. In addition to steel as a medium for his sculptures, Serra has utilized rubber belts, neon tubes, molten lead, and large metal slabs. In 1968 he made his first Splash-piece, where molten lead was thrown against the point at which floor and wall meet. His 'Prop series" began around 1969 and involved placing large lead sheets against each other, several yards apart, or hung from ceilings. Many of his pieces are enormous three-dimensional configurations from steel beams and steel plates. His goal is to "create a 'field force . . . so that space is discerned physically rather than optically' " (Baigell, 323). Based in New York City, Serra has traveled extensively to oversee his numerous site-specific sculptures including one for Videy Island near Reykjavik, Iceland. Consisting of nine pairs of basalt columns along the periphery of the island, it has been the most time consuming of his works. He also spends several months a year on Cape Breton island in Nova Scotia "to fill up the reservoir." RICHARD SERRA (AMERICAN 1938-2024) UNTITLED (DRAWING) signed RS lower right paintstick on paper 25.9 x 28.3cm; 10 1/4 x 11 1/4in Property of a Private Collector Provenance A gift from the artist to the present owner in 2008 Executed in 2008 at the time of the artist's exhibition at Gagosian, Britannia Street, London Serra had employed black paintstick (compressed oil paint, wax, and pigment) as his preferred medium since 1971. Applied in the present work using broad, dense strokes, the paintstick conveys a strong sense of optical weight, acutely similar to the physical presence of his sculptures. Serra was an avid draughtsman, his drawings defying any metaphoric or emotive reading, instead expressing the notions of time, materiality, weight, and process that characterised his sculptural practice.

RICHARD SERRA (San Francisco 1939–2024 New York) T.E. Siegen. 1999. Etching. 29/40. Signed and dated in pencil lower right: R. Serra 99. Sheet size 151,1 × 121 cm on Sommerset Satin tan paper. Published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles (with the blindstamp). Printed by Matthew Jackson and Carmen Schilaci. Catalogue raisonné: Berswordt-Wallrabe, Nr. CR 131. "Black is a characteristic, not a property. Understood as a weight, black is heavier, creates a larger volume and can be compressed onto the surface of a field. It is comparable to forging. [...] The use of black is the clearest method of making a mark against a white surface." Richard Serra "T.E. Siegen" by Richard Serra is the fruit of a powerful accumulation of material that lends the forms a tangible presence and a perceptible sense of weight and mass through its numerous layers of oil crayon. This expressive work is an excellent example of Serra's experimental approach to printmaking, with a process that strikingly combines traditional and contemporary etching techniques. Through the use of waxy oil crayons, paint sticks, precise photography, screen printing processes, advanced transfer methods, selective etching and the use of the so-called sugar lift process, Serra creates a work of art that is captivating in its rich texture and sculptural qualities. For the work offered here, from 1999, Serra either pours liquid wax from melted paint sticks at random onto a copper plate, or rubs the solid oil crayons – often using his feet – through an aluminium silkscreen grid. In order to preserve the unique nature of Serra's technique for the printing process, the textured sculptural images are meticulously photographed and transferred to the printing plate in several steps and using various techniques: on the cleaned and lacquer-sealed plate, for example, the highest points of the image are given a water-soluble sugar-coating using screen printing techniques. After a further coating of glaze/varnish/lacquer, a warm water bath and a carefully monitored etching process, the etching is finally printed. --------------- RICHARD SERRA (San Francisco 1939–2024 New York) T.E. Siegen. 1999. Radierung. 29/40. ---------------
