    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

JOAN SERRA MELGOSA (Lérida, 1899 - Barcelona, 1970). "Boats in the harbour". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Frame with slight faults in the polychromy. Measurements: 65 x 113 cm; 83 x 130 cm (frame). In this work Serra Melgosa approaches the landscape from an impressionist point of view of clear Catalan filiation, marked by the light and by an everyday approach to the scenery. The brushstroke is dense, loose and very expressive, and the drawing practically disappears, leaving the way open for colour and light. Joan Serra Melgosa trained at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Francesc Labarta. A member of the group Los Evolucionistas, he exhibited for the first time in 1918. He painted mainly intense self-portraits, still lifes and landscapes, in earthy tones and a nervous style dominated, however, by a constructive rigour with Cézannian roots. In 1925 he travelled to Madrid, where he became particularly interested in El Greco, and two years later he spent a few months in Paris. He was closely associated with the Sala Parés in Barcelona, where he exhibited regularly from 1927. Sick with tuberculosis, in 1930 he retired to several mountain sanatoriums, where he moved even closer to landscape painting. He exhibited at the Sala Parés and in Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and San Sebastián, as well as taking part in exhibitions in Paris, London, Pittsburgh, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Caracas. His awards include the Barcelona City Council prize in 1931 and the Jaume Morera gold medal in 1950. He is represented at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona and the Museum of Fine Arts in Lérida.

JOAN SERRA MELGOSA (Lleida, 1899 - Barcelona, 1970). "Still life with flowers". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner.

    Est: €700 - €900

JOAN SERRA MELGOSA (Lleida, 1899 - Barcelona, 1970). "Still life with flowers". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 73 x 100 cm; 93 x 120 cm (frame). Still life with daisies and fan in which the author, in spite of being inspired by the traditional school of the genre, composes a completely avant-garde image not so much in the way of arranging the elements, but in the objects that make up the scene. An example of this is the curtain on the left of the composition which, despite being a common resource, in this case the play of tones produced on the canvas lends dynamism and vivacity to the piece. The artist focuses on the chromatic work, with an image in which the brushstrokes are broad, rapid and vibrant in such a way that the drawing takes second place, in some cases showing the outline as, for example, in the flowers on the right. Joan Serra Melgosa trained at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Francesc Labarta. A member of the group Los Evolucionistas, he exhibited for the first time in 1918.
