Spots of surface dirt and a white streak (visible in the catalogue image). Artist pinholes to the corners. A small area of loss to the lower left corner. Small dent, centre of right edge. Paint surface thin in places. UV reveals a small area of retouching, upper left, and some further minor areas of retouching to the background, and a few areas elsewhere.

Varallo, 1860 - 1915 Ritratto di Elda Firmato E Serra in basso a destra Olio su tela, cm 72X37 Ernesto Serra ha studiato all'Accademia Albertina di Torino con il professor Andrea Gastaldi e ha vinto una medaglia d'oro per la pittura di ritratto. Pittore delicato, dai toni intimisti, predilige la pittura di paesaggio e il ritratto con una attenzione all'aspetto psicologico curando in particolare lo sguardo delle figure ritratte. All'Esposizione italiana di Torino nel 1884 espose un ritratto di donna di nome Elda, che fu molto apprezzato dal pubblico e di cui in seguito produsse circa quindici versioni, tra cui il dipinto presente nel nostro catalogo. Nel 1886 espose un dipinto intitolato'CosÏ' alla mostra 'Primavera Fiorentina' organizzata dalla Società delle Belle Arti di Firenze. A ciò seguìl'esposizione dei dipinti 'Lilia', 'Civetteria' e 'Trastulli materni' all'Esposizione Nazionale Artistica di Venezia del 1887. Dal 1888 al 1895 visse a Parigi, dove espose 'Maura pensierosa' e 'Visione' all'Exposition Universelle. Dopo il suo ritorno in Italia, aprìil suo studio in Corso Valentino a Torino. Molti dei dipinti di Serra furono acquisiti dalle gallerie statali e municipali, ma fu anche sostenuto dal re Vittorio Emanuele III d'Italia e dalla principessa Isabella di Baviera. Più tardi nella sua vita si concentrò sulla pittura di paesaggio delle montagne vicino a Torino realizzando bellissime vedute.
