**UPDATED PROVENANCE** RARE EXHIBITED Large Ivan Ferreira Serpa (1923-1973) "XVI" 1961 Contemporary Original Tempera on Canvas. Ivan Serpa was a Brazilian artist, and a founding member of Grupo Frente, along with fellow artists Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica, and Franz Weissmann, and professor at Museu de Arte Moderna. He was one of the most important contributors to Brazilian Concretism and Neo-Concretism. In addition to geometric constructions, he has also done several neo-expressionist paintings in the '60s (the "Black Period" and the "bichos" paintings). This beautiful painting shows the early techniques and darker tones that Serpa perfected as he is transitioning into what critics have called his “black period". Signed "SERPA 61" on the lower right corner of the front of the canvas. The back of the canvas is signed "14 Julho 1961" on the left side and "Serpa 61 Rio de Janeiro Brasil" on the right side. Es ging vielmehr um eine kollektive Ablehnung der modernen brasilianischen Kunst mit ihrem figurativen und nationalen Charakter. So wurde in viele Richtungen und mit verschiedensten Materialen experimentiert. In these exhibitions Serpa himself was present alongside other artists such as Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Abraham Palatnik and Hélio Oiticica just to name a few. Several of these artists were either students or former students of his from the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Although this group was well aware of the current discourses within the Western art world of abstract painting and constructivism (i.e. Max Bill), they did not adhere to any one particular artistic style. It was much more focused on creating a collective rejection of modern Brazilian art of figurative and national characteristics. Thus, it expanded in several different directions and experimented with various materials. Therefore Ivan Serpa will always remain the painter and in his work is primarily concerned with geometric abstraction, which can be seen in the present piece.
