From 1927-33 he was educated at the Leningrad Academy of Arts under Vasilii Evmen'evich Savinskii and Isaak Izrailevich Brodskii where he further worked as a teacher after graduating. He was a member of the board of the Artist's Union of the RSFSR and from 1962-68 president of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. In the 1950s Serov began making copies of the work as demand for such 'propaganda' works grew. This could be construed as the evidence of its popularity with the city defenders. In The Bolshevik Poster, Stephen White cites the Dmitry Eglit’s opinion that the poster was modeled after Apsit’s To the Defense of Petrograd! (1919), but Eglit’s arguments are not particularly convincing and are colored by his desire to “rehabilitate” Apsit as an important revolutionary artist. The image of a motley crew of determined defenders launching a fierce counterattack found its way into Russian and European paintings (and posters) long before 1917; thus it is not surprising that Serov and Apsit, facing a virtually identical assignment, and working under tight schedule, followed the same tried and trusted scheme.Isaak Brodsky considered Vladimir Serov one of his most talented students. Serov was also an important art functionary. As the head of the Leningrad Artists Union, he became the man in charge of visual propaganda production in the besieged city. In 1943, he was transferred to Moscow. He continued to paint and to rise in the ranks of the Soviet art hierarchy, eventually becoming President of the Soviet Academy of Arts.

SEROV, VLADIMIR 1910-1968 Not One Step Back! Poster Design c. 1941-42 Pastel on paper, 89 by 64 cm. When during the Second World War the Soviet Union was invaded by Nazi Germany, Vladimir Serov remained in Leningrad. He headed the Leningrad Union of Artists, which had become the headquarters for the city's production of visualpropaganda material for military and political use. In the extremely difficult conditions of the blockade, the famine, the cold, hostile fire and bombing the Leningrad Union of Artists undertook major defensive operations. The artists camouflagedimportant military targets, published newspapers for the army and navy, and produced leaflets to be dropped over the location of enemy troops as well as political posters. Among the most talented of this team was the painter and graphic designer Vladimir Serov. His first poster, We Have Fought, We Are Fighting, We'll Go on Fighting! appeared on the streets of Leningrad on 26 June 1941. In the Fighting Pencil series Serov designed such propaganda masterpieces as Only Forward, Till Our Enemy Is Crushed! and Our Cause Is Right. The Serov sketch now on offer, Not One Step Back!, was also part of this series. Serov's best poster designs are heroic in character: expressive psychological types of powerful, fierce, steadfast Soviet patriots, unhesitating in their actions, full of hate for the enemy. Political propaganda posters by such skilled artists as Vladimir Serov are extremely rare in private collections. Most original posters are preserved in major Russian museums. It is therefore with especial pleasure that we now offer this splendid example.

VLADIMIR ALEKSANDROVICH SEROV (RUSSIAN 1910-1968), "V.I. Lenin Proclaims Soviet Power", 1954, Artist's copy of his own original painting from 1947 , oil on canvas, 100 x 77 cm (39 3/8 x 30 3/8 in.), the verso with a faded government stamp and a handwritten inscription, Serov V. / Kopiya Avtorskaya / 15 Yuna 1954. Vladimir Serov painted the original version of V.I. Lenin Proclaims Soviet Power in 1947. The present lot is one of the few copies that the artist made himself of his own composition in the years that followed. It is especially interesting to note that there were several versions of this painting. The original painting depicted Stalin, Dzerzhinsky, and Sverdlov standing on the tribune behind Lenin. The painting itself was considered so important that it was presented to Mao Tse Tung. In versions of the painting after 1956, Serov was ordered, due to the collapse of the personality cult after the XXth Congress of the Communist Party in the same year, to not show Stalin or the others, but replace them with workers. The present lot, painted in 1954, does show the full Bolshevik leadership as the artist originally painted it, including Lenin, Stalin, Dzerzhinsky, and Sverdlov, at the historic meeting of the Second All-Russia Congress of Soviets at the Smolny Institute in October of 1917
