    Nov. 28, 2024

FREDERICK SERGER* (Ivancice 1889 - 1965 New York)

    Est: €1,600 - €2,600

FREDERICK SERGER* (Ivancice 1889 - 1965 New York) Still life with poppies oil/canvas 41 x 50,6 cm signed Serger SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 1600 - 2600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 1600 “For me, painting has never been a hobby or mere pastime; I have always felt it as a calling—something I wanted to work on intensively to achieve satisfaction. In my painting, I have always had the urge to be honest and never strived for purely aesthetic effect.” For Frederick Serger, painting was a vocation and passion he discovered at a young age, which would accompany him throughout his life as both an artist and art collector. In the 1930s, he emerged under his birth name, Fritz Sinaiberger, as a student of painting and, more importantly, as a patron of Sergius Pauser. In 1941, he had to emigrate to New York via London, Panama, Guatemala, and Mexico. Alongside his own artistic career, he and his wife, Helen Spitzer, built an extensive collection of modern art, now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The harmony of colors meant everything to him. Contemporary critics particularly highlighted his talent in handling color and praised his powerful intertwining of forms and colors. In the still life with poppies, the striking petals and the stems that extend far beyond the vase immediately catch the eye. An exotic-looking small vase is placed on a simple wicker stool, from which the poppies fan out across the picture. Here too, the spatial situation is unclear and secondary; instead, the fascination lies in the reduction combined with coloristic sophistication. Anyone who has ever placed poppies in a vase knows that this enjoyment lasts only a short while. In the 1950s, when Hermann Serient, a young goldsmith and jazz musician from Melk, set out hitchhiking to see the art of the “old masters” up close in Europe’s museums, he was particularly interested in the “painting art” of Hieronymus Bosch or Bruegel and the Dutch Renaissance painters’ handling of materials. Like them, Serient uses self-made colors that he does not mix on the palette but applies in many thin glazes directly on the support, preferably wood, until he achieves the desired hue. In 1965, Serient found himself in southern Burgenland, where he still resides today. The archaic and hermetic world in the villages of the “Heanzen” seemed incomprehensible to the urban Serient, even though he quickly made personal connections. However, his fascination with the mysterious festivals and rituals remained. Serient was often categorized within the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, a label he always rejected. For him, art only has value if it possesses content and does not fall into arbitrariness. Since the 1960s, Serient has increasingly engaged not only with the culture of the “Heanzen” but also with environmental issues and other political subjects. Serient’s paintings often deal with falsehood and hypocrisy, with being and appearance, and with the control over the image that others have or are supposed to have of oneself. Surrealism and charm; absurdity and repulsiveness; wit and serious engagement—these aspects are inseparable in Serient’s work. The aesthetics, the striking colors, and the details are not ends in themselves; they do not aim to obscure but rather to reveal: “Once I have the viewer looking at the colors, they might look further and discover that these are not such friendly people after all.” Frederick Serger, who was born in Eibenschütz, Moravia, spent his school years and military service in Brno and then moved to Vienna to study at the art school there. During the First World War, Serger served in the Austro-Hungarian army and from 1919 he stayed in Paris and took art courses. In 1927, Serger married and settled in Skotschau, Poland. During the 1930s, Serger took part in important exhibitions in Poland and Paris. At the beginning of the Second World War he initially fled to London and then traveled via Panama, Guatemala and Mexico to New York, where he stayed until the end of his life and became a constant part of the burgeoning American artistic scene. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
