pencil on canvas thin cardboard Preliminary drawing made by Seneca for the famous advertising poster for Amaro Felsina Ramazzotti published in 1937. Among the founders of Italian poster art in the early 20th century, Seneca with his graphic language, initially close to the elegant refinement of Dudovich, later the brief futurist interlude will trace highly original results. What was unique to him and made his style unmistakable was the development of a volume form that he used on numerous advertising posters, some of which for Buitoni, others for Ramazzotti and still others for different companies, showing that he preferred, if despite the inevitable two-dimensionality of the poster, the plastic research. FEDERICO SENECA (1891-1976) CIOCCOLATINI PERUGINA. Circa 1930. 78x55 inches, 198x139 3/4 cm. Grafiche Baroni, Milan. Condition B+: repaired tear from seam, into lower image; repaired tears in margins; creases in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; slight lifting along seam. Two-sheets. Seneca studied at the School of Fine Art in Rome, where he began his career as a painter and graphic designer. From 1919-1929, he was the art director for the pasta and chocolate company Perugina-Buitoni. His work "in many ways . . . was the perfect synthesis of [Art Deco, Futurism and Cubism] . . . he created stylized, tubular figures which revealed the influence of Leger and Depero and the whimsical memorability of Cappiello" (internationalposter.com).

FREDERICO SENECA (1891-1976) BUITONI. 1929. 76 3/4x55 1/2 inches 195x141 cm. Baroni, Milan. Condition B+: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; restoration in margins; abrasions in image. Two sheets. Over the course of his ten years with Buitoni, Seneca had to vary the ways he advertised the company's products, forcing him to come up with new and unexpected ideas. Here, he takes a page from Cappiello's style book to present an image that would embed itself in the viewer's mind. This happy, well-fed baby's face would have been immediately noticeable and immeasurably appealing to consumers and shoppers. Although the image itself may be unexpected, the typography, as in Seneca's other posters, remains an elegant sans serif. Manifesti p. 102.

From 1919-1929, he was the Art Director for the pasta and chocolate combine Perugina-Buitoni. Here, advertising pasta, he places a nun within a mystical, silent atmosphere. He subtly plays with light and shadow to amplify the religious aspect of the image; suggesting that Buitoni is "The Holy Pasta."
