  • England.- [Seller (John)] The English Pilot. Part I Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports, 1704
    Mar. 27, 2025

England.- [Seller (John)] The English Pilot. Part I Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports, 1704

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

England.- [Seller (John)] The English Pilot. Part I Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports, 31 double-page engraved charts, some folding, one map and numerous woodcut costal profiles within text, some light creasing at folds, but overall a clean example, contemporary red straight-grain morocco, gilt, skilfully and sympathetically rebacked, some light rubbing and marking, folio, Richard Mount and Thomas Page, 1704. Provenance: Bloomsbury Auctions, London, 21st May 2015, lot 388 ⁂ Attractive example of this rare edition of the first series of chart-books published in England, possibly the only extant copy of this edition (unrecorded on ESTC, not listed on COPAC or WorldCat). While not the earliest English map- and chart-publisher, there is truth in the statement that Seller is the father of the English map trade, directly connected to many of the leading figures in the map trade into the 19th century. He was also the first English chart-publisher to make a real attempt to break the dominance of Dutch marine publishers such as the Blaeus, Coloms, Doncker, Goos and de Wit.

  • Seller & Senex - Celestial Chart - Australis Hemisphaerii tabulam (Seller, c. 1679)
    Mar. 01, 2025

Seller & Senex - Celestial Chart - Australis Hemisphaerii tabulam (Seller, c. 1679)

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

This remarkable celestial engraving is from John Seller & John Senex's Stelleri Zodiacus Stellatus. The work charted Edmund Halley's southern hemisphere stars and visualized the new coordinates of John Flamsteed. The work was published in London between 1675 and 1721 by Senex et. al. It is a rare English astronomy chart from the cartographers, John Seller and John Senex. The original work had four charts from Seller including two of the Northern hemisphere, one of the Southern hemisphere, and a zodiac map. The zodiac map would be "the first published zodiac" described as “being very useful, at all times, to find out the places of the Planets; wherein may be seen their daily motion, and their appulses to the Fixed stars. Accurately laid down by the said Mr. Edmund Halley.” (Warner, p. 233, no. 3) The work also included four charts from Senex's shop, including two of the Northern and two of the Southern skies which were the work of John Flamsteed. “Through the charts and globes of Senex … the Halley/Flamsteed catalog was widely available." (Warner, p. 239) John Flamsteed who had been tasked with “dragging positional astronomy into the seventeenth century, of bringing it abreast of the new descriptive astronomy to which the telescope has thus far been almost exclusively applied.” (DSB, vol. 5&6, p. 23) Flamsteed's observations contributed to the known number of northern stars increasing by 2000. “Flamsteed’s catalogue, developed from telescopic observations, was the first to include seventh-magnitude stars [and] Senex’s maps, based on Flamsteed’s catalogues, were the first depicting these telescopic stars … The positions of novas (i.e., new and variable stars) and nebulas on Senex’s maps were derived from Halley’s two review articles published in Philosophical Transactions in 1715 and 1716. Thus the north equatorial map shows four new stars and two telescopic nebulas.” (Warner, p. 242) Provenance: Bookplate of Macclesfield Library. George Parker, the 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, was also an astronomer that entered the Royal Society in 1722 just as Senex would be publishing the Halley and Flamsteed charts.

  • Seller's Coasting Pilot
    Jan. 27, 2018

    Seller's Coasting Pilot

    Est: $55,000 - $75,000

The Coasting Pilot: describing the sea-coasts, channels, soundings, sands, shoals, rocks & dangers. upon the coasts of England, Flanders and Holland, with directions to bring a ship into any harbour on the said coasts. John Seller (ca 1630-1697). London: John Seller, William Fisher and John Wingfield, [ca 1672-1680]. Folio (16 6/8 x 11 inches). Engraved title-page and 18 maps on 12 double-page engraved mapsheets all with FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOR, numerous coastal profiles in text, advertisement on verso of last leaf (lacking O2 blank, one or two rust and worm holes). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments (binding expertly and recently cleaned, strengthened and conserved by James & Stuart Brockman Ltd., under the supervision of Stephen Massey, a full report is available on request); modern fleece-lined clamshell box by Brockman. Provenance: anonymous sale, Christie's, 22 July 1970, lot 17, £880, Stephen C. Massey, for Lord Wardington; Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), Library of Important Atlases and Geographies. "PUBLISHED FOR THE BETTER SECURITY OF HIS MAJESTIES ROYAL NAVY IN THIS PRESENT EXPEDITION" (advertisement in "Term Catalogues"). "The Coasting Pilot" was first advertised in the "Term Catalogues" for Hilary Term 1672 (licensed on 7 February), at six shillings bound, the announcement also referring to the "Second Book of the English Pilot", but in terms of the charts, the "Coasting Pilot" is not an original publication - the only new chart present here is the oblong folio "Draught of the Landsend of England and Islands of Silly" - the suite of English charts (British Isles, North Sea, southern North Sea, Thames Estuary and Rivers Tyne and Humber), combined with the text, and textual illustration are a significant improvement on existing charting of England's east coast, and paved the way for Greenville Collins's "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot", some twenty years later. Indeed, were it not for Seller's continuing financial problems, it seems certain that Seller would have produced just such a volume. Chart 1 was engraved by Francis Lamb for Seller's "Description of the Sands, Shoals, Buoys, Beacons, Roads, Channels, Sea-Marks on the Coast of England, from the South-foreland to Orford-ness", and subsequently appeared in the "English Pilot". This copy lacks the additional leaf extending the chart northwards to Bornham, present on the British Library copy. Shirley, British Library M.SELL-2a; Wing S2469.
