Similar paintings of Alcide Segoni fetch up to 8,000 euros on the international market The present painting is the work of the Italian artist Alcide Segoni (1847-1894). The fine scene shows a monk in discussion with two lansquenets in a courtyard. The representation is characterized by a crisp rendering of details and enchanting color freshness. The present painting follows the trend of the costume pictures, which became very popular around 1900. The painting is signed top right, 'A. Segony'. It is, in general, well presented, showing some wear. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface displays slight framing marks with a few small areas of retouching to the left margin. The gilt stucco frame is in good overall condition, showing some small losses to the left side. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 60 x 70 cm. The stretcher measures 46 x 56.5 cm. Alcide Segoni (1847-1894) Born in Florence, the Italian painter Alcide Segoni studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with Professor Antonio Ciseri. His favorite subjects were historical and genre scenes, as well as landscapes. One of his most famous works is the painting 'Corradino di Svevia in Carcere' (Conradin of Hohenstaufen in Prison) in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. In 1877, he took part in the national art exhibition in Venice, and in 1881 to that in Milan. In 1889, he received a commission for the battle of Austerlitz, which was much praised by the Florentine art critics.
