    Tom Secrest (Louisiana, Contemporary)

    Est: $1,400 - $1,800

Tom Secrest (Louisiana, Contemporary), "Untitled", acrylic on canvas, unsigned, 28" x 22". Unframed. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Secrest has spent most of his life in Lafayette Louisiana where he was a professor of Visual Arts at the University of Louisiana until his retirement. An accomplished printmaker and draughtsman, SeacrestÆs work seamlessly melds the psychological and fantastical. There is an intentional ambiguity as to subject, meaning, and symbolism, resulting in works which suggest the visionary and verge on the dystopian. This feeling is enhanced by his frequent use of self-portraiture in his compositions. As the artist himself has stated, ôThe issue of reality had little interest in me. To be the dreamer and escaping person has long been my way of living.ö His works are in numerous private and public collections, including the New York Public Library, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the College of William and Mary. PLEASE NOTE: Secrest has been an active and influential member of the Lafayette, LA art community since he relocated to that city to assume a position at the University of Louisiana. As a printmaker for over 40 years, Secrest has always extolled the importance of drawing and of the significant relationship between drawing and printmaking. As the artist himself stated, "From the practice of repeated drawing a personal narrative has generally resulted. Internalized forms, characters and places have become clearly evident to me - personal icons have developed. Repeatedly...such things have taken on special meaning for me. Some may see it as a form of fantasy, but for me it has resulted in forming a personal reality." Reference: Hancock, "Tom Secrest - Exhibition Catalog". Cue Art Foundation. 2008.
