(Ghisi) 66, Lewis/Lewis R 8 III (von V), Bellini F 13 III (von V). -- -- Das Blatt wurde in Vergangenheit Giorgio Ghisi und versuchsweise Georg Pencz zugeschrieben, wird heute aber als eine Arbeit von Giovanni Battista Scultori angesehen. Vor der Adresse Rossis. Ausgezeichneter, gleichmäßiger Druck minimal knapp innerhalb der Einfassung beschnitten, teils mit Spuren derselben. Leicht angestaubt, kleine Mängel im Ober- und Unterrand, so etwa kleine Fehlstellen im Unterrand, alt aufgezogen, weitere Alters- und Handhabungsspuren, sonst in guter Erhaltung. Engraved signature and date in the lower margin centre: I.B.Mantuanus Sculptor 1538. Engraved inscription lower right: Jo. Jacomo Rossi formis Romae 1642 alla Pace. 41.7 x 59 cm. Bartsch 20; TIB 20. - A superb, strong impression with rich contrast and with small margin around the plate mark. Fix mounted on card. Subtle foxing mostly in the margin areas, with small tears, occasional rubbing and traces of wear. The upper area of the left margin with a light water stain. The vertical centre fold with visible crease, possibly with backed tear. The lower right corner with smaller paper loss and creases. Punktuell auf einen Unterlagenkarton fixiert. Überwiegend in den Randbereichen dezent stockfleckig, mit kleineren Einrissen, vereinzelten Bereibungen und Gebrauchsspuren. Der linke Rand im oberen Bereich mit leichtem Wasserrand. Die vertikale Mittelfalz mit sichtbarer Knickfalte, möglicherweise mit hinterlegtem Einriss. Die untere rechte Ecke mit kleinerem Papierverlust und Knickfalten. Trotz der genannten Mängel guter Gesamteindruck. ---------------

            Scuola del nord Italia del XVI secolo, da un disegno di Giovan Battista Scultori, detto Giovan Battista Mantovano (Mantova 1503 - 1575) Marte e Venere Olio su tavola 118 x 97 cm La nostra opera, per il suo stile realizzativo e la sua brillante resa cromatica, è una notevole rappresentazione della pittura lombarda o veneta del XVI secolo. Essa nasce dal disegno, poi inciso tra il 1537 e il 1540 (bulino, Bologna, Pinacoteca Nazonale, Gabinetto delle Stampe e Disegni) di Giovan Battista Mantovano (o Giovanni Battista Scultori), pittore e incisore manierista, formato con Giulio Romano. Tra i più importanti allievi del maestro, questo disegno testimonia la grande importanza presso i Gonzaga dei temi mitologici nei decenni centrali della prima metà del XVI secolo. Scultori frequenta Giulio Romano, e tra i suoi disegni egli profila delle statue, poi realizzate in stucco in Palazzo Te, a Mantova. Vasari restituisce di lui una visione positiva, soprattutto loda i suoi disegni definendoli "invenzione, disegno e grazia straordinaria". L’opera, che non riproduce pedissequamente né il disegno né le incisioni che si sono succedute, è una rilettura del tema dello Scultori in chiave di un sobrio manierismo classicheggiante, con l’aggiunta del paesaggio oltre la finestra, probabilmente dovuto a influenze venete, nonché del putto ai piedi dell’alcova. Ausgezeichneter und klarer Druck mit feinem Rändchen um die Einfassungslinie, teils auf diese geschnitten, im oberen Rand mit Spuren der Plattenkante. Unauffällige vertikale Mittelfalte, kleine Bereibungen mit winzigen Retuschen in der linken Brust von Goliath, etwas berieben in der linken Wade von David, schwach fleckig, Montierungsreste verso, sonst in sehr schöner Erhaltung.
