Johnson Gallery, Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Estate of Edward "Ted" L'Engle Baker and Ann McDonald Baker, Jacksonville, Florida. Literature: Conner, Janis and Rosenkranz, Joel, Rediscoveries in American Sculpture: Studio Works, 1893-1939, Austin: University of Texas Press, 1989; Rubenstein, Charlotte Streifer, American Women Sculptors, Boston: G.K. Hall & Co., 1990. Notes: "The feel of that clay in my hand was entirely different from anything I had ever experienced before. Just the mere sensual part of it, the touch, seemed to fire me with something tremendously stimulating." Born into a Terre Haute, Indiana family that experienced severe personal and financial difficulties shortly after her birth, Scudder had a difficult childhood; her mother died when she was five, four of her six siblings died in childhood, and her father's confectionary business failed. Through her resilience, determination and continued persistence in the face of adversity, she was to ultimately become one of the most successful women artists of the early to mid-20th century. She attended drawing classes at a local art school before entering the Cincinnati Art Academy, where she supported her studies by carving ornaments for furniture and mantels. She later attended the Art Institute of Chicago and worked with a local woodworker until the woodcarver's union - unhappy a woman was working in their field - threatened to strike unless she was dismissed. This seeming set-back proved to be a pivotal moment in her career; her former instructor, Lorado Taft, was looking for studio assistants. Taft had successfully petitioned the director of the World's Columbian Exposition to allow for women sculptors and Scudder, along with fellow artists such as Bessie Potter Vonnoh, began work on the Exposition's structures. Her formidable skill soon earned her two personal commissions for the Illinois and Indiana buildings, for which she was awarded a Bronze medal. Impressed by Frederick MacMonnies' submission, "Barge of State", she determined to become his student. This was no easy task; MacMonnies was at the time one of the most acclaimed sculptors and, significantly, had never accepted a woman student. Unbothered and undeterred by his consistent rejection, Scudder showed up at his studio in Paris in 1894. Finally wearing him down, MacMonnies accepted her as an assistant; he was eventually to consider her one of his most accomplished and promising students. While in France, Scudder attended the Academie Colarossi and organized lessons for her fellow women artists at the Academie Vitti. Upon her return to the United States in 1896, despite her obvious skill, credentials and impressive letters of introduction from the most celebrated sculptors of the day, Scudder was rebuffed by the New York art community - most specifically by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who refused to accept her as a studio assistant. Undeterred, she supported herself by producing bas-relief medallions, and doing ornamental architectural work. In 1898, she returned to France and the following winter she and a friend traveled across Italy. It was during excursions to the ruins of Pompeii that Scudder was inspired to reconsider the course of her career and her artistic approach. As she later stated, "I filled my brain and my sketchbook to overflowing with all those gay pagan figures and then and there decided never to do stupid, solemn, self-righteous sculpture - even if I had to die in a poorhouse…My work should please and amuse the world…My work was going to decorate spots, make people feel cheerful and gay - nothing more!" Thus began her series of what she referred to as her "water babies"; chubby, cheerful garden figures and fountains with more than a hint of the antique. On her return to New York, she began a relentless campaign to convince the architect Stanford White, arguably the most influential American architect at the time, that a business association would be equally beneficial to them both. After years of correspondence - mostly on her part - he eventually conceded after seeing one of her fountains in the garden of one of his client's. They were to collaborate closely on the park and garden designs until his untimely death. In 1914, Scudder created a sculpture of Pan for one of the grottos in John D. Rockefeller's country estate Pocantico Hills which resulted in a full- page interview in the New York Times. She had now reached the apex of her career and found her work in high demand. Throughout her life, Scudder refused to allow society's assumptions and opinions on women artists to impede her in any way, scoffing quite vocally at any insinuation of any inherent physical or intellectual limitations. Her career trajectory as a sculptor, still an unusual path for a woman in the early decades of the 20th century, went hand in hand with the burgeoning suffrage movement. Scudder was a member of the New York State Woman Suffrage Association, on the art committee of the American Woman Suffrage Movement, and took part in numerous parades and demonstrations. In 1915, she created "Femina Victrix/Victory", a sculpture modeled by her friend Irene Castle which was initially intended for a National Suffrage Monument. In 1920, she was made an Academician of the National Academy of Design and in 1925 the French government named her a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur for her relief work during WWI.

JANET SCUDDER American (1873-1940) Young Diana bronze, signed and stamped with foundry mark "Alexis Rudier Foundeur Paris" height: 27 inches Provenance: Private Collection, Ohio; Shannon's, Milford, Connecticut, October 29, 2015 lot 121; Private Collection, Connecticut. Other Notes: tags: female artist, woman artist, sculpture Janet Scudder holds an important place in the history of American sculpture, particularly of the early twentieth century. Her ornamental fountains in the Beaux Arts style were uniquely appealing at a time when most monumental sculpture was represented by salutes to war heroes and other male-centric political themes. After experiencing the horrors of World War I, Scudder noted, "I won't add to this obsession of male egotism that is ruining every city in the United States…My work was going to make people feel cheerful and gay, nothing more!"[1] The lauded Beaux Arts architect Stanford White commissioned many works for his wealthy clients from Scudder, including the Frog Fountain, Tortoise Fountain and Young Diana drawing her bow (a monumental version of the present lot). Scudder was born to middle-class parents in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1869. Her father was a confectioner and her mother sadly died young when Janet was just five years old. She had a difficult childhood losing four of her six siblings before they reached adulthood and a step-mother who did not appreciate Scudder's nature. Charlotte Rubinstein writes, "Scudder was a tomboy, later recalling in her autobiography, 'I could skin a cat, hang by my toes… As for skating on ice in moonlight, no one could outdistance me.'[2] She remained adventurous and uninterested in so-called female pursuits for the rest of her life."[3] Instead, she was very interested in drawing, painting and other crafts. She had her first artistic success, and the one that meant the most to her, when she was still a child. She entered a hammered brass tray in the form of Medusa's head to the Indiana State fair and won the first prize. Her artistic talent was evident by the time she finished high school. She enrolled in the Art Academy of Cincinnati upon graduation. From there, she continued her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, worked in the studios of Lorado Taft and then Frederick MacMonnies, and completed additional training in Paris at the Académie Vitti and the Académie Colarossi. Returning to the States looking for work, she struggled to the point of deep despondency until finally obtaining a commission from the New York State Bar Association. The creation of their seal opened up additional commissions for her in portrait medallions and tablet memorials, and from there she attained continued lifelong success. A feminist and suffragist, Scudder was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and marched with Abastenia Eberle in suffrage parades. Her awareness of women's new sense of their bodies is shown in her Victory bronze, created around 1915 as a tribute to the suffrage movement. The dancer Irene Castle modeled for the work. The slim, almost boyish figure heralds the 'flapper' aesthetic that was rising to prominence as women threw aside their corsets and other constricting garments, shortened their hair and pursued a freer sense of movement. The youthful Diana evokes this same spirit with her powerful, athletic posture, nimbly balancing on the bronze ball pedestal while aiming her bow. Scudder spent most of her later years in Paris, going back and forth from Paris to New York while handling a steady stream of commissions. She preferred Paris due to the stimulating social circle of women she connected with there, including Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Mildred Aldrich and Eva Mudocci. During World War I, she turned over her villa to the YMCA to be used as a hospital and went to work for the Red Cross. She was named a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor for this work. She returned to the states permanently at the outset of World War II and died soon after of pneumonia in 1940. Janet Scudder was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1920 and her works are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and Musée d'Orsay among many others. Janet Scudder (American, 1869-1940) Portrait of Peggy Guggenheim, 1930s oil on canvas signed lower left. Biography from Sotheby's London, New Bond Street Janet Scudder was born in Terre Haute, Indiana into an impoverished family plagued by misfortune. With help of friends and relatives she enrolled in local art classes and later the Cincinnati Academy of Art and moved through a succession of wood carving and studio assistant jobs in Cincinnati and later Chicago, encumbered by the fact that often female practitioners were forbidden to work. Her career and style took shape due to stints in the studios of Loredo Taft and Frederick Macmonnies between 1893 and 1896 and a number of years spent travelling as an artistic companion to a succession of American heiresses. As much as this helped her, she felt suppressed by the solemn statuary produced by her male colleagues and the monotony of living a luxury lifestyle and soon decreed "never to do stupid self-rightious sculpture - even if I had to die in the poorhouse" (Scudder, op. cit., p. 165). From 1900 onwards she focused on joyous representations of children and youthful literary characters, often in the form of fountains, and swiftly found recognition and a steady stream of commissions. Around 1908-1913 she produced some of her best known work, such as The Tortoise Fountain, The Young Diana, and The Little Lady of the Sea, often during trips to Europe. Scudder equally sharpened her pen and tongue during this time, lashing out to dilettante woman artists, gender inequality, and dull art. A cast of The Seated Faun is in the Brooklyn Museum (inv. no. 26.184), dated 1924. 25 1/4"H x 20 3/4"W (image), 32 1/4"H x 28"W (frame).

"The Little Lady of the Sea". Cast bronze fountain sculpture, ca. 1912, Alexi Rudier Fondeur, Paris, inscribed by atelier and artist on base. Nude holding seaweed above her head, exiting a small grotto. Commissioned for Harold McCormick's famous Lake Forest estate "Villa Turicum". One of probably four made; one was known to be in California. This fountain was exhibited in New York at Scudder's first solo show at Starr Galleries, and was subsequently sold. Also exhibited in the Salon d'Automne, Paris. During her time in New York, Scudder attracted commissions from wealthy Americans constructing lavish homes and gardens. After considerable persistence, she prevailed on the architect Stanford White to recommend her garden sculptures to his clients. View on AspireAuctions.com"
