        • Bob Scriver (1914-1999) Warrior Scouts c. 1962
          Nov. 09, 2024

          Bob Scriver (1914-1999) Warrior Scouts c. 1962

          Est: $600 - $800

This is an original circa 1862 Bob Scriver “Native American Warrior Scouts on the Scent” bronzed chalkware sculpture. Chalkware sculptures were done by Scriver himself at his home foundry for a limited time, very few are known to exist. Robert Mcafee Scriver (1914-1999) was born in Browning, Montana (in the heart of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation) in 1914. Scriver began sculpting using taxidermy to learn his craft of making wildlife bronzes. By 1962 he became a charter member of the Society of Animal Artists, had been accepted into the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America, listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and a member of the National Sculpture Society, and the National Academy of Western Art. The piece depicts a scene of two Native American men on horseback following trails of other horses and men. They are examining a U. S. Army canteen that had been dropped. Both are holding spears and one has a large shield on his back, while the others is slung around his hip. The piece shows great attention to detail throughout the men, the horses and the terrain they are on. The piece is signed twice around the bottom edges reading, "©1962 Bob Scriver". The piece shows fair condition overall with some large chipping in the back of one of the mens necks, a partially broken spear tip, and a broken spear tip. The piece measures 15" L x 10 1/4" W x 14 1/4" H and weighs 13 pounds and 10 ounces. This is a chalkware piece and could likely damage in shipping, pickup required or shipping at your own risk. This sculpture has sold previously for $1,197 (w/ bp) in Nov. 2023.

When striving for accuracy and an authentic portrayal of this event, I have shown both the horse and the rider making a high-scoring effort. Hence the title ‘Pay Window’. Bob Scriver (1914-1999) Heading for a Wreck, 1968

          Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Bob Scriver (1914-1999) Heading for a Wreck, 1968 bronze, 3 17 x 36 x 27 inches inscribed: © Bob Scriver, 1968 -3-,“Heading for a Wreck”, Bighorn Foundry This very large and impressive work by Bob Scriver is considered by most Western art collectors as one of the top three bronzes from his Rodeo Series. In describing this piece, Scriver said, “Sculpting this action, I decided to picture the hazer as well as the dogger because the hazer is most certainly an essential part of the bulldogging sequence. Getting the story told was of prime importance here. However, there were many opportunities for good sculptural design. Proper arrangement of the elements was of great importance to the authenticity of the piece. It was not my purpose in these sculptures about rodeo to depict the cowboy as a man who always makes the perfect ride or the perfect catch, but rather as a man, who, although he knows his business, can and does make errors. This is so evident here where the dogger’s timing is just a little off and the steer and he are going to go head over heels.”

His Cowboy works include a heroic work of Bill Linderman at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma and his "Rodeo In Bronze" series, one of four belonging to the Devonian Institute in Canada. Scriver was commissioned to do such pieces as a Montana Trapper and belt buckle for the Montana Historical Society to help raise funds to purchase the C.M. Russell painting, When the Land Belonged to God, which raised $96,000.00. In 1981, for the Winchester Arms Company, he was also commissioned to do a famous logo called, The Winchester Rider. This set a new record for contemporary sculptors with gross sales totaling over one million dollars. This edition of 250 was completely sold out in 30 days from the time of National advertising. Scriver's art depicts a sense of freedom that has been lost by the Indian and is seemingly being lost by the cowboy. The Late Dr. Harold McCracken, Director Emeritus of the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, was quoted in the forward of Scriver's book NO MORE BUFFALO as calling Scriver: "America's foremost sculptor today-bar none". Scriver died January 29,1999. He has left behind him stories, and dreams of the West....in bronze.
