    • AFRO AMERICAN OIL PAINTING BY WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT
      Aug. 04, 2024

AFRO AMERICAN OIL PAINTING BY WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT

      Est: $100 - $150

William Edouard Scott, African, American, 1884 to 1964, oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Mountains and Palm Trees. Signed lower right. Framed. Provenance: Fine Art Auction, Trinity International Auctions and Appraisals LLC, April 27, 2024, lot 54. William Edouard Scott was an African American artist. Before Alain Locke asked African Americans to create and portray the New African that would thrust them into the future, artists like William Edouard Scott were depicting blacks in new ways to break away from the subjugating images of the past. Scott, well known for his portraits, Haitian scenes, and murals, challenged the standard depiction of Africans in art in the first half of the 20th century by utilizing black subject matter in an uplifting way. However, just as his style remained traditional as opposed to abstract, he was relatively conservative in his portrayals. Antique Afro American Fine Art, Landscape Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.

William Edouard (W.E.) Scott(1884-1964) 13" x 16" oil on board, Summer Landscape, signed lower left. Recently conserved. The following biography is from the fineestateart.com website: William Edouard Scott was born in Indianapolis on March 11, 1884. He was well known as an artist not only for his talent, but for his ancestry also. He was part Native American, with Cherokee and Blackhawk grandparents, and part African American. He graduated from Manual High School, studying under Otto Stark, who encouraged him to pursue art. He went on to study at John Herron Art Institute, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Academy of Art in Paris under the well known H.O. Tanner. When studying in Chicago, he labored by sweeping the floors of the institution in order to earn his own tuition. Later, Scott went on to become a teacher and assistant in the art department at Manual High School. He specialized in portraits and murals in post-impressionistic style- murals being what he was truly known for. From 1913 to 1964 he painted 26 murals, many of which were destroyed due to buildings being torn down. However, he also painted an additional 40 murals for Protestant and Catholic churches in Chicago during his time living there. Of his many murals, some prominent ones were located on: the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington D.C.; the Illinois Statehouse; the Indianapolis City Hospital (today Wishard Hospital); the courthouses in Ft. Wayne and Lafayette; and several public schools. His mural in Washington D.C. was of Frederick Douglas Appealing to President Lincoln, which won not only that particular mural contest, but national acclaim as well. In 1931, Scott received the Julius Rosenwald fellowship to study in Haiti. While he was there for a year he became very influenced by the linear style of African Art and subsequently produced roughly 150 paintings. His work has since been shown all over the world, including: Atlanta; Buffalo; L.A.; Washington; Smithsonian Museums; Paris (Spring Salon & Salon La Loque); New York; Chicago; London (the Royal Academy); the Indiana State Museum, and more. Despite having his leg amputated in 1957 because of diabetes, he still continued to work and paint. When he died he was survived by his wife of 40 years, Esther, and his daughter, Joan Wallace. WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT (1884 - 1964) Untitled (Man with Child Holding Basket).

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT (1884 - 1964) Untitled (Man with Child Holding Basket). Oil on linen canvas, circa 1931. 768x508 mm; 30 1/4x20 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left. Provenance: the estate of Claude A. Barnett and Etta Moten Barnett, Chicago. Etta Moten Barnett (1901 – 2004) was a popular African American actress and vocalist, who was best known for her signature role of Bess in Porgy and Bess. She married Claude Albert Barnett (1889 – 1967) in 1934. Barnett was an influential and trailblazing national figure - an important media entrepreneur, journalist and one of the principal organizers of the Chicago Negro Exposition in 1940. Barnett is also known as the founder of the Associated Negro Press in 1919, the first Black news service in the country, connecting Black newspapers across the country. This depiction of a Haitian man and a boy crossing a street is a beautiful and scarce example from William Edouard Scott's early Haitian period. Scott, born in Indianapolis, trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1904-09. After winning several painting scholarships and awards at the Institute, he travelled to Paris, where he studied with Henry Ossawa Tanner and enrolled at the Académie Julian. When he returned in 1912, he received many mural commissions, including for the Chicago World's Fair of 1933 and for the Federal Art Project of the WPA in Chicago. While Scott's time in Paris had a profound effect on his early work, the year Scott spent in Haiti shaped the rest of his career. Scott was awarded a Julius Rosenwald Foundation scholarship in 1931 to study and paint the African beliefs and customs that had survived in the culture of this independent island nation. Scott left for Haiti that year, and did many plein air sketches around the docks and streets of the capitol city Port-au-Prince. These studies were later translated into larger canvases in the artist's rooftop studio of the Excelsior Hotel in Port-au-Prince. With his extensive experience painting murals, Scott specialized in large multi-figure scenes, but painted moving portraits as well. Others include Blind Sister Mary and Kenskoff, Haiti, both circa 1931, collection of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the New York Public Library. Schulman p. 86; Taylor/Warkel figs. 17-18, p. 35.

William Edouard Scott 1884-1964 Forest Glade with Deer and Egret Oil on canvas c. 1930 Signed. Original frame. Scott was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, one of two children of Caroline Russell and Edward Miles Scott. His introduction to formal art training came at the Manual High School in Indianapolis, where he studied with Otto Stark, one of the Hoosier Group artists. Encouraged by Stark, Scott went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1907 (although he continued classes for two additional years). As an upperclassman, Scott was awarded mural commissions at local schools and won the Magnus Brand Memorial Prize for three consecutive years, and these financial success provided him with the finances to travel abroad. He traveled to Paris, where he met and spent time under the tutelage of Henry O. Tanner. Scott enrolled as a student at the Académie Julian, and had works accepted at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Francais in Paris, the second African-American after Tanner to do so. His work in Europe focused on French genre scenes, especially peasant life. He was invited to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1912 and 1913. When he returned to the States, he applied this French academic tradition to genre scenes painted of southern African Americans. Scott also painted portraits of important African American figures Frederick Douglas, Booker T. Washington, and George Washington Carver and illustrated several covers for The Crisis. In 1927, Scott was awarded the Distinguished Achievement award from the Harmon Foundation, and four years later, he received the Julius Rosenwald Fellowship to study and paint in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He spent over a year here and completed over 144 works depicting peasant life. After his return, he painted murals celebrating African American history and culture. Throughout his career, Scott remained devoted to traditional, academic methods of painting and realistic style. His work may be found in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art; Du Sable Museum of African American History; New York Public Library; National Gallery of Art; Guggenheim Museum; Columbus Museum, GA; and Fisk University. 24 x 24 inches

Provenance: Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. This charming landscape is a scarce depiction of the rural South by William Edouard Scott. From Indianapolis, Scott first trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1904-08, and under the mentorship of his friend Henry Ossawa Tanner, studied at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1909-10. Scott made two more trips to Paris and London between 1911-1914, and his painting La Pauvre Voisine was celebrated at the Grand Salon in Paris in 1912. When he returned from Europe, he repeatedly toured the South seeking to paint rural scenes that were not typical of the landscape genre. In 1915, he also studied at the Tuskegee Institute as the guest of Booker T. Washington, painting the portraits of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. This particular landscape was painted mid-career, just a few years before Scott was awarded the Julius Rosenwald Foundation scholarship in 1931 to study and paint the African beliefs and customs that had survived in Haiti.

William Edouard Scott, (American; 1884-1964), Haitian street scene, oil on board, 24" x 18".

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

William Edouard Scott (American; 1884-1964) Haitian street scene oil on board signed lower left. Born in Indianapolis, William Edouard Scott attended Emmerich Manual High School where he was under the artistic tutelage of Otto Stark, one of Indiana's most prominent artists of the day. After graduation he would help Stark teach drawing to freshmen, thus becoming the first black person to teach in a public high school in Indianapolis. Enrollment at the Art Institute of Chicago led to mural commissions for several Chicago and Washington DC public schools. Like the majority of artists of the day, an art education was not considered complete until instruction had been taken in Europe. In 1909 and 1911 Scott traveled to France where he would be mentored by Henry Ossawa Tanner, one of the leading black American artists of the day. France was successful artistically for Scott and he returned to Indianapolis and commissions to paint murals in the city's public schools in 1912. The next two decades would be fruitful for Scott, having numerous exhibitions, and winning many awards and commissions. In 1931 Scott was awarded a fellowship to study in Haiti. Spending more than a year there, he painted over 144 works and was an inspiration to many local artists. Scott's short visit to this black republic was to have a long-lasting and profound effect on him and he would continue to draw on Haitian subject matter for many years to come. In Haiti, his preferred subjects were the common people and their everyday activities, dress, customs and lifestyles. One custom, popular with men, was the Sunday afternoon cockfight, and Scott would render this subject in both painting and mural form. By 1934 the U.S. troops that had been occupying the island since 1915 withdrew, therefore this undated mural was likely executed during Scott's stay from 1931-32.
