      Sep. 08, 2022

Signed John J. Scott Painting - "Two Dalls" (1987)

      Est: $600 - $900

**This is an oversized piece that may require special shipping. Please inquire for a quote prior to bidding. John J. Scott (American, 1919-2016). "Two Dalls" oil on canvas, 1987. Artist's signature and ram symbol on lower left. A mesmerizing landscape painting by John Scott whose art reflects his deep respect and connection to wild life. This composition features two dall rams enjoying the sedges and grasses of the alpine environment with snow-capped mountains in the distance. Both rams boast grand, curling horns which are traditionally used to partake in dominance contests; however, Scott has managed to capture a moment of peace between this pair. Size: 24.25" L x 18.25" W (61.6 cm x 46.4 cm) Size of frame: 27.75" L x 21.75" W (70.5 cm x 55.2 cm) John Scott was an American artist of Scottish heritage. He lived in a log cabin in the woods of Kittredge, Colorado that he built from the ground up and created sculptures and paintings inspired by the wildlife and scenery of Colorado and Wyoming. According to his wife Dorothy, "He was always working and always looking for something to throw himself into completely." Of note, John was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage, learned to play the bag pipes, and wore his Clan Scott tartan kilt. John was also an avid hunter of large game in Colorado and Wyoming as well as British Columbia and Alaska. Not only did John build his log cabin which he called "Brig-O-Doon" - he also built and operated his own studio and foundry. Indeed, John's passion for his chosen profession was boundless; in his words, "Art is a monster that sweeps over me and it seems I never satisfy that creative spirit." A little note on John Scott's signature ram symbol: Scott was greatly inspired by Charles Marion Russell whose emblem was a buffalo skull symbolizing his strong connection to the American West. Following in Russell's footsteps, Scott chose the ram as his symbol, because the Rocky Mountain bighorn ram with its massive curling horns is the state animal of his beloved Colorado. John Scott loved his homeland and his art has been exhibited throughout the American Southwest and beyond in reputable galleries of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and California. Provenance: private John J. Scott Collection, Kittredge, Colorado, USA, acquired from the late John J. Scott All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Scott began as an apprentice at Pendleton's Lithography in 1830 at the same time as fellow Roxbury native Nathaniel Currier of Currier and Ives. In 1844 Scott started a lithography firm in partnership with Fitz Hugh Lane ("Lane & Scott's Lithography"), which lasted until 1847. The firm successfully produced lithographs dominated by ships, landscapes and architectural forms. Scott continued to produce "exceptional" lithographs into the 1850s and would remain friends with Lane. Around 1852 he kept a studio in Boston's Tremont Temple. Scott's work sold well during his time; for instance, in 1855 he "sold more than 50 landscapes at auction." Among his favorite subjects was Southern New Hampshire's Mount Monadnock. He belonged to the New England Art Union and the Boston Art Club (1863-1907), of which he was the oldest member at the time of his death. Scott also frequently exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum.Scott's paintings are now held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Currier Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the New Hampshire Historical Society, and The Butler Institute of American Art, among other museums and galleries.
