Depicted as an indomitable matriarch, Maryann Armstrong is the mother of trumpet virtuoso Louis Armstrong. She gave birth to him in 1901 in Battlefield, New Orleans. After the birth of her daughter, Beatrice, and the absence of her husband, she suffered poor health. Needing to work, she had Louis and his sister move in with their grandmother for the next five years. After fifth grade, Louis began picking up odd jobs to help support his mother and younger sister. Throughout his young life, Maryann was an ardent supporter of his musical talent. Educator, sculptor and printmaker John T. Scott was born in Gentilly, Louisiana in 1940, and raised in New Orleans' Ninth Ward. His father worked as a restaurant cook and chauffeur while his mother stayed home. He learned embroidery from her that served as his first foray into the visual arts. Having a Catholic New Orleans upbringing, Scott attended the Xavier University in New Orleans receiving a BA degree. He received his MFA degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing in 1965, where he studied under painter Charles Pollock. Afterward, Scott returned to Xavier where he taught for 40 years. In 1983, Scott received a grant to study under sculptor George Rickey, and in 1992, he was awarded the MacArthur Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Scott received an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Michigan State University in 1995 and a Doctor of Humanities from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1997. His works are in the permanent collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC. John Scott Bronze - "Explosion at Gate 7" (2004)

John J. Scott (American, 1919-2016). "Explosion at Gate 7" silicon bronze, 2004. Inscribed with the artist's signature and ram symbol as well as the title of the piece and the edition number 2/50 on the front edge of the integral bronze base of the piece. Skillfully and meticulously cast via the lost wax process, "Explosion at Gate 7" is an action-packed piece featuring a bronco rider bolting out the gate by American artist John Scott. Every nuance of horse and rider's motions is captured in this sculpture. The rider's body is practically mid-air with limbs extended and one arm raised to catch the cowboy hat rising above his head. The horse's mane is blowing this way and that, his torso twists dramatically, and the bucking bronco's legs are raised in a jump. Notice that the rider has actually lost his grip on the reins, and Scott has captured the rider's focused intensity with a knitted brow expression. Size: 10.25" L x 10.5" W x 15.125" H (26 cm x 26.7 cm x 38.4 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom stand. John Scott was an American artist of Scottish heritage. He lived in a log cabin in the woods of Kittredge, Colorado that he built from the ground up and created sculptures and paintings inspired by the wildlife and scenery of Colorado and Wyoming. According to his wife Dorothy, "He was always working and always looking for something to throw himself into completely." Of note, John was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage, learned to play the bag pipes, and wore his Clan Scott tartan kilt. John was also an avid hunter of large game in Colorado and Wyoming as well as British Columbia and Alaska. Not only did John build his log cabin which he called "Brig-O-Doon" - he also built and operated his own studio and foundry. John created his bronzes via the lost wax process, a method first used by the ancients. His technique involved 24 steps from the creation of the mold to pouring the hot bronze to welding the piece back together to the embellishing with finishing touches. Indeed, John's passion for his chosen profession was boundless; in his words, "Art is a monster that sweeps over me and it seems I never satisfy that creative spirit." A little note on John Scott's signature ram symbol: Scott was greatly inspired by Charles Marion Russell whose emblem was a buffalo skull symbolizing his strong connection to the American West. Following in Russell's footsteps, Scott chose the ram as his symbol, because the Rocky Mountain bighorn ram with its massive curling horns is the state animal of his beloved Colorado. John Scott loved his homeland and his art has been exhibited throughout the American Southwest and beyond in reputable galleries of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and California. Waiting at the Station is a monumental woodcut from John T. Scott's series of expressive prints of New Orleans, each carved into a single sheet of plywood with a small chainsaw. Scott completed what would be one of his last series of works in 2003 just a few years before Hurricane Katrina which changed so many peoples' lives in New Orleans. Allan L. Edmunds writes it "evokes interpretations of the many voices and ever-changing rhythms of life in the city, which Scott knew before Katrina. In some respects, Scott's monochromatic compositions pay respect to less glorified and colorful aspects of Orleans' culture - the ‘Quilt' that binds people together, by preserving strong traditions, embracing the history and learning from the struggles of the past to know that a rebirth was inevitable." Referring to the practical production of Scott's woodcut, Susan Stedman writes that he accentuates the grain of the wood by hand-pressing prints with so much pressure that the tool marks are distinguishable upon each impression: "Scott chose to emphasize the impact of his hand, making recognizable tool marks and lines on the wood's surface. He described, in comparison, one of his bold experiments carving in wood: ‘I didn't want my ideas to look facile…It dawned on me that the only time you can have control over anything is when you realize you don't have control. So, I chose the chain saw. I wanted to give up the facileness that I know I have with tools to get at a combination of material and tool that was not that compatible and not that easy to control.' John T. Scott 1940-2007 Shango's Necklace Painted brass, steel and wood on flagstone base Kinetic sculpture 1984 Faintly signed and dated on base. Scott was born in New Orleans, LA, and studied at Xavier University, New Orleans, (BFA, 1962) and then Michigan State University (MFA, 1965). He became a professor of art at his alma mater, Xavier, after completing graduate school. â€œ John T. Scottâ€™s abstract sculptures of painted steel and aluminum use tensionâ€”formal, technical, and conceptualâ€”as the structuring principle behind works that, while derived from the uniqueness of the artistâ€™s New Orleans-based African American cultural experience, convey universal resonance through the suggestion of ritual.â€ â€”St James Guide to Black Artists, Nicole Gilpin, p. 474 The year both of these works were executed, 1984, Scott was invited by kinetic sculptor, George Rickey, to spend six weeks working at the Hand Hollow Foundation in East Chatham, New York. Scottâ€™s interest in moving sculpture was encouraged by Rickey, and he used the time to develop what he called a â€œkinetic vocabularyâ€. The previous year, Scott worked as the chief designer for the African American pavilion for the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Yvonne Edwards-Tucker wrote in the International Review of African American Art (vol 6, no. 2; p. 42) about Scottâ€™s work following his exposure to Rickey: â€œHis newest works consist of intricately and exquisitely crafted wood and metal sculptures. This seriesâ€¦carries a sacredly/serious multiple reference to a type of curved African stringed instrument originally fashioned by the hunter from his bow and arrow to assuage his remorse after the kill; and to the McComb Mississippi Delta folk music associated with the pounding rhythms of blues guitarist, Bo Diddley. These delicately balanced, open, linear sculptures, sensitive to the slightest changes in wind movements, are more obliquely abstract than his previous static sculptureâ€”and yet, they remain strongly welded to the same roots, thematically.â€ The diddie bow, as it was called, was an African myth, which involved the hunter restringing the bow used to kill an animal and then playing a lyrical memorial to its spirit. It spoke to Scott formally as a visual tool and culturally as a reclamation of African history that also suggested the significance of music to the African American experience.
