Schwingen 1844, Oil on canvas, 81 x 102 cm, framed, (Rei)See Also: Lexicon of the Düsseldorf School 1819-1913, published by the Art Museum of Düsseldorf and Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf, 1997, Vol. 3, p. 263.Peter Schwingen: Studied between 1832-1840 at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art under T. Hildebrand and W. Schadow. Schwingen was a founding member of the association of Düsseldorf Artists. In a way unusual for the Düsseldorf iconography of the time, he gave his figures back a biedermeier-style inner space - a personal sphere - which aided the characterisation of the personalities. He also painted many conventional portraits, as well as genre compositions of town scenes and also later some paintings with sharp socially critical overtones.
