    Est: €2,200 - €2,860

Oil on panel Austria, 19th century Carl Schweninger the Younger (1854-1903) – Austrian painter Signed 'C. Schweninger jr' and inscribed 'Wien' lower left On the reverse with wax seal 'Hirschler & Comp.' of the Viennese art gallery Dimensions: 32.2 x 25.5 cm Gilt stucco frame: 45 x 36.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Baltic States Very good condition The painting of a lady with cigarette and book in her hands, pausing to think, is characteristic for the spirit of the rococo and it´s a typical work of the Viennese painter. Condition: The painting is in very good condition. The varnish is slightly darkened due to the age and scattered marks can be seen. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas. The frame shows traces of usage. A small spot with loss of material can be seen close to the lower left corner. The dimensions are 32.2 x 25.5 cm and the frame measures 45 x 36.5 cm. Carl Schweninger, the Younger (1854-1903) Carl Schweninger, an Austrian painter and sculptor, descended from a family of painters. His father was the landscape painter Carl Schweninger the Elder and his sister Rosa Schweninger focused on portraits and genre depictions. Schweninger junior was a pupil of his father and studied at the academies in Vienna and Munich. His oeuvre is characterized by the zeitgeist: It shows mainly genre paintings with staffage in rococo outfits painted in interiors or in the landscape.
