In the foreground the painter included a rich decoration with strollers, a dog and a passing coach Condition: The painting is in very good condition. The inspection under UV light reveals small, mostly only selective areas of retouching. In the outer edges of the painting the old dirty varnish is partially still visible and there is one minor spot with loss of paint. The frame is in good overall condition and has only minor signs of wear and few smaller color chippings, which hardly affect the overall impression. The German painter specialized in the depiction of picturesque townscapes, which he rendered in a very fine manner of painting. Here he captured the view of the Spittlertorgraben, part of Nuremberg city wall. The medieval buildings rise before a lightly clouded sky, a small garden with a peasant woman drying the laundry is displayed in the foreground. A delightful little scene! The painting is signed and dated 'A. Schwendy. 1885.' lower left. It is in good condition. The new varnish was applied irregularly. The edges are slightly rubbed due to framing. The left edge and at the upper left corner show minor color chips (hidden by the framing). The frame is slightly bumped. The framed work measures 51 x 45.5 cm, the board measures 29.4 x 23.5 cm. Albert Schwendy (1820-1902) Born in Berlin, Albert Schwendy studied under Michael Neher in Munich, Gottlieb Biermann in Berlin and Eugène Lepoittevin in Paris. From 1848 onwards he worked in Berlin and later settled in Dessau. Schwendy created numerous picturesque views of various towns and villages in which he portrayed market squares, churches and castles.
