Lon., numbered Archive 512 and variously stamped (verso)46 x 35.5cm (18 x 13¾ in.)Provenance:Commissioned by The American Club, 95 Piccadilly, London (originally as a formal portrait 87 x 98cm) as patron of the club Decommissioned and returned to artist on closure of the club The sitting for the formal portrait took place at 14:00 on 3rd May 1979 at Buckingham Palace and the artist recalls how the sitting took place in the room looking out onto the iconic Royal balcony. His Royal Highness, Prince Philip is shown looking directly toward the viewer, smartly dressed wearing The American Club tie. The sitting was arranged on a podium with gilt chair but Schwatschke suggested a nearby sofa which relaxed the atmosphere somewhat. This meant that the previously discussed formal portrait became a smaller head and shoulder which posed more suitable and intimate. The artist's mother remarked that she never expected that one day a son of hers would be sat inside Buckingham Palace looking out. After originally training as an architect with the company Vincent Kelly, Schwatschke moved to Munich where he studied portraiture under Franz Erhmer. John Schwatschke career blossomed as a presidential and Royal portrait painter producing many important high society portraiture including Archbishop McAdoo, Noel Purcell and Modigliani's notable model Lunia Czechowska. Since the late1960s Schwatschke signed his works with his last name using a tall lettering style that appears almost as if a barcode stamped onto the surface of the canvas. Le Musée Schwatschke was originally established in Valbonne, Provence in 1971 to benefit the town and display the artist's archive of works. This was during the period when Schwatschke rented his studio next to Picasso in Mougins from French singer Serge Reggiani between 1970-1976. However, the project was halted as the Minister of French Museums at the Louvre did not pass the venture and the artist encouraged by CJ Haughey, minister for Finance for Ireland opened the project in Ireland. The private art museum in Carlow, Ireland was opened by the Austrian Ambassador Dr. J. Nestor with Suzanne McDougald. The gallery later closed in 1994.Please note measurements do not include the frame unless otherwise stated.
