    Anton Schultz (1894-1977) German/American, 4 Framed Etchings

Anton Schütz (1894-1977) German/American, 4 Framed Etchings. Shows the New York Stock Exchange, Berlin Stock Exchange, Bank of England, and the Stock Exchange of Rome. Each signed in pencil.  Overall: 17 1/2 X 20 in.  Sight: 9 1/2 X 12 in.  #3908 .  Anton Friedrich Josef Schütz was born on April 19th, 1894 in Berndorf, Rhine-Province in the  Kingdom of Prussia. He studied under master engravers in his youth and at the University of Munich, but his education was cut short during World War I. After serving in the German Army he attended the Royal Academy of Fine Art, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering and Architecture in 1920. He immigrated to the United State in 1924 to escape the interwar poverty of Germany. He settled in New York City, where he met and befriended the draftsman Joseph Pennell. Schütz had several solo exhibitions in the late 1920s at Anderson Gallery, and along with Pennell and several others he founded the New York Graphic Society in 1925. He is best known today for his cityscapes and architectural etchings, especially of New York, and he produced dozens of etchings for Encyclopedia Britannica and other publications, particularly the New York Times and Times Magazine. Sadly, most of Schütz’s early plates were destroyed during World War II when he donated the metal to the war effort. He died on October 6th, 1977 at his home in Manhattan, and today examples of his work can be found in the many museums around the world, including the Smithsonian and the Uffizi.
