      Peter Schmidt (German/New Orleans, 1829-1866)

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Peter Schmidt (German/New Orleans, 1829-1866), "Meyer Godchaux (1817-1873)" and "Rosine Kahn Godchaux (1834-1894)", c. late 1860s, 2 oils on canvas, both signed lower right, each 36 in. x 29 in., framed alike. (2 pcs.) Provenance: Estate of Eve Godchaux Hirsch, New Orleans. Note: Meyer Godchaux and Rosine Kahn were married around 1850 and had two children, Paul Meyer Godchaux, who married Eva Ruth Dablestein, and Mathilde Godchaux, who married Gabriel Schwartz. Meyer Godchaux was a successful merchant and the family had residences on Bourbon Street and Esplanade Avenue. His brother, Leon Godchaux, was the founder of Godchaux’s department store on Canal Street. Peter Schmidt was a German painter in New Orleans with a studio on Royal Street from the late 1850s until his death in 1866. His close location to the Godchaux family, as well as the fact that the Godchaux family likely spoke German, emigrating from the Lorraine region in France on the border of Germany, makes it quite understandable why he was chosen to paint the portraits of Meyer and Rosine Godchaux. The charming depiction of this couple in pendant portraits speaks to Schmidt’s painterly skills and, more importantly, serves as an important preservation of New Orleans’ culture and history.
