A student of John Clemmer, Robert Heldner and Pat Trivigno, he studied art at Tulane University's Architecture School and Newcomb College. Schmidt found inspiration in the history and culture of the city. In 2006, he focused his attention on the New Orleans Fair Ground Racecourse and horse racing. Always maintaining elements of realism, he used expressive brushwork in the painting "Green Jockey" to convey the momentum of the pending horse race.

George Schmidt (American/New Orleans, b. 1944), "Nick LaRocca at the Corner of Canal and Royal, New Orleans, 1915", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 48 in. x 60 in., framed. Note: Celebrated local artist George Schmidt is known for his playful depictions of New Orleans’ cultural moments – both contemporary and historical. In his paintings of the past, he “recasts historic events or famous paintings with his own visual irony and playfulness.” The painting on offer here is from Schmidt’s “A History of New Orleans Jazz” series. Famed traditional jazz musician Nick LaRocca is depicted playing in “Papa” Jack Laine’s Reliance Band to an attentive crowd from the back of a bandwagon, while promoting a prizefight between local featherweight Peter Herman and Eddie Coulon as indicated by the scattered flyers littering the ground. LaRocca’s performance so impressed Chicago club owner, Harry James, he invited him to play at his Booster’s Club in the Windy City. This important day in December 1915 is regarded as one of the cultural cornerstones in the history of jazz, as it is emblematic of the soon-to-be widespread proliferation of New Orleans jazz throughout the country and world. The composition is compelling and dynamic, and Schmidt’s training in architecture at Tulane University is evident in the crisp perspective of the French Quarter buildings at the Royal and Canal streets intersection. The sharp lines direct the viewer to witness and partake this important day in musical history. Ref.: “George Schmidt.” 64 Parishes. Sept. 12, 2012. https://64parishes.org. Accessed Oct. 15, 2019. George Schmidt (American/Louisiana, b. 1944), "Rex Court", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 81 in. x 122 in., unframed. (4 pcs.) Note: Local artist George Schmidt is known for his playful depictions of New Orleans’ cultural moments, both contemporary and historical. In his paintings of the past, he “recasts historic events or famous paintings with his own visual irony and playfulness.” These qualities resonate in his more recent works as well, and his keen eye for satire and social commentary is evident in the lot on offer here—a monumental painting of the Rex court that transcends time and maintains cultural relevance. George Schmidt is a painter of history, one who researches his subject matter meticulously and presents his viewer with the known facts, combined with wit and satire. The artist's attention to detail and accuracy are evident in his note about the painting: "I feel confident to claim without fear of contradiction that my painting is probably the most accurate portrayal at present. Thanks in large part to my friend Tim Pickles, an authority on the battle and author of a book entitled "New Orleans, 1815, I have attempted to depict the brevity of this battle accurately. The battle was fought at dawn during one of the coldest winters in memory. It was short in length and small in number of participants. It lasted only two hours with the climax lasting a mere 15 minutes. The British reported 2,037 casualties. Andrew Jackson reported only 13." The cinematic narrative style and grand scope of the canvas are appropriate for the heroic subject matter of the painting, which captures the event that effectively ended the war of 1812. New Orleans Auction Galleries is pleased to offer this important work in our September, 2012 sale, befitting of the 200th anniversary of Louisiana statehood.

George Schmidt (American/Louisiana, b. 1944) "The Pirate Lafitte Having Breakfast with the British", oil on canvas, signed lower left "Schmidt", 13" x 20". Presented in a custom-made triple-banded deep ebonized wood frame. In the words of the artist, Note: "This picture represents the meeting that was held in Barataria in 1814 between three British officers - two naval captains and a Royal Marine - and Jean Lafitte. The British fleet had entered the Gulf of Mexico and had come to negotiate with Lafitte to enlist his help in capturing New Orleans. Lafitte invited them to breakfast. The British had brought to Lafitte three offers: 1) a captaincy in the British navy, or 2) $25,000, or 3) if not agreeing to either of those offers, they would destroy his operations in the invasion. This image is based on two sources: the book "Lafitte the Pirate" by Lyle Saxon, and the letter that was sent by these naval officers to the British Admiralty in London describing the elaborateness of the breakfast and sumptuousness of the table setting. In this painting I have conflated two incidences in that far-off morning of 1814 - I have depicted Lafitte's men arriving at the breakfast and glaring angrily at the British, because in actuality when the British left the breakfast, Lafitte's men threw them into the calaboose, whereupon Lafitte ordered his men to release the British because they were their guests."

Provenance: Blackamoor Antiques. Note: George Schmidt kindly shared his memories of this painting: "What this painting really is, is an elaborate self portrait. I am the figure in the white tie and tails with my hands up in the air, but I am also standing to the left in a mask and costume I bought on what was formerly Dryades Street, now Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. I must have been reading William Butler Yeats at the time. He had a theory that every artist wears a mask that reveals his true identity. One of my favorite artists is Diego Velazquez, and in this painting I pretended I was like him; a court painter and the rulers of this court are the King and Queen of Carnival. To the right you see Moon Landrieu, the former mayor of New Orleans. I just liked his face and for fun I put a moon in total eclipse above him. Why did I do it? It's like the naked man that jumped in a rose bush, it seemed like a good idea at the time!
