        BILL SCHMIDT WATERCOLOR PAINTING

15" by 22 1/4". Bill Schmidt (Born 1932) is active/lives in Maryland. Bill Schmidt is known for Impressionist maritime, landscape. Marylander, Bill Schmidt is a landscape painter, favoring the maritime views of the Chesapeake Bay (Annapolis) and the New England harbor towns of Rockport and Gloucester, also the rolling countryside and small towns of Western Maryland. A plein-air oil painter, he calls himself an "American Impressionist," painting with the heightened awareness of color and light found in the tradition of the French and American Impressionists. Bill Schmidt was born March 18, 1932 and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey. Bill graduated from Cornell University in 1957 as a chemical engineer and worked for many years with electric utility companies. Always keen on drawing, he began painting in oils as a hobby when a neighbor suggested they take painting classes through an adult education program. From then on, "the joy of painting was instilled in me." His first outdoor painting lesson in 1962 with Steve Moneath changed his life: "I still have that painting!" The following year, he studied privately with painter Carl Illig in Buffalo, New York, an association that lasted five years. "Illig inspired me the most," remembers Schmidt. "My first two instructors taught their classes outdoors in all seasons, so I became an on-site landscape painter." These early classes established the method and style he has used in painting ever since. As Schmidt's jobs took him to different parts of the country, he studied with outdoor landscape artists in New England and western New York, working with Steve Maniatty in Greenfield, Massachusetts and later with Charles Movalli, an artist/writer who worked closely with Emile Gruppe of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Bill's style developed from his admiration of American landscape painters such as Gruppe, John Carlson, and Harry Ballinger. In 1984, he left his engineering career to become a full-time artist. Since then, his landscapes have been juried three times (1990, 1991 and 1999) into the highly competitive national "Arts for the Parks" exhibition in Jackson Hole, (WY). The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown (MD) featured his paintings in 1992. He received national attention when he was selected by Colville Publishing for publication of the silkscreen, "Annapolis Harbor," now sold out. Two original silkscreens of the San Francisco area followed as well as three more East Coast images. Bill Schmidt's work was juried into the 2000 Mystic Seaport Museum Exhibit in Mystic (CT). Bill's paintings are realistic but with a 'painterly looseness'. "I select certain elements to heighten and others to play down, carefully planning each painting to capture the nuances of light and color that let us see nature through the artist's eyes. I hope that I do convey the immediacy and vibrancy of the outdoors in my paintings. I'm not out to create a specific mood. I'm simply painting the mood that exists." Bill's approach to painting is usually three-fold. First he scouts various locations locally and on trips to identify potential scenes and to create pencil sketches, noting the best time of day for painting (and the optimum season). Next, from this catalog of sketches, he picks an appropriate site for that day's work and goes on location to paint the scene. While on location, he makes notes concerning light, colors, angles, etc. As a plein air painter and a former engineer, a compass has become a favoite tool to return to the exact angle of each location. Finally, he works on the field painting in his studio, finishing it from his notes. "However, I am very careful, as I add those finishing touches, not to destroy the freshness and immediacy that I'm able to obtain by painting outdoors," he says. Sometimes, these preparations have humorous results. "I make a lot of notes and rough sketches when I'm evaluating a scene," says Bill, "and people get nervous when they see me looking intently at their property and writing things down. Some of those who've had the courage to ask me what I'm doing have been relieved to find that I'm not working for a developer about to buy up their neighborhood, not taking the license number of their boat moored illegally at a private dock, and not looking over their property to report improvements to the tax collector." Schmidt is represented by several galleries across the United States. From 1993 to 1998 he was sponsored by Colville Publishing (CA) and was the featured artist for 18 shows in Japan. His work hangs in corporate and private collections including the Bank of Baltimore, Franklin National Bank, Mortgage Bankers Association, the Maryland Association of CPA's, the Oliver Carr Company, Towson State University, The Baltimore Sun Papers, and Cornell University. Bill Schmidt (American, 20th Century) "Mariner's Cove" Limited Edition Print 381/395 FRAMED

        Est: $200 - $400

Signed in pencil lower right by the artist. Original Silkscreen edition of 395. Gold leaf framed with white paper mat. Bill Schmidt has been a professional landscape painter for more than 30 years after careers as a nuclear engineer, consultant, and founder and president of a training firm. His art training consisted of working with several superb outdoor landscape painters and studying the masters of French and American Impressionism and the New England school of marine painters. (His undergraduate degree from Cornell University was in chemical and nuclear engineering.). His distinctive paintings are realistic yet impressionistic, painterly but with enough attention to detail so that the subject matter is easily recognizable. He paints outdoors in all seasons at home and in his travels, from New England to California and in Venice, Paris, and Bermuda. Even the foreign scenes are mostly done en plein air using a Pochade Box and archival boards when it’s too difficult to fly with a full-size easel. Bill lives in Rockville, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC, with his wife, Dottie; they have three children and five grandchildren. Besides painting, Bill enjoys reading about art and artists, visiting art museums, and attending opera and theater. When working in his studio, he always paints to opera recordings because the music energizes him!
