      AUGUST SCHMIDT

      Est: $150 - $250

AUGUST SCHMIDT (1883 - 1955) German general of flak artillery, commander of Luftgau VI which provided troops to counter Market Garden operations. Convicted of war crimes. Lot of two war-date signed letters on his military letterhead concerning Gefreiten Rembert Freiherr von Schorlemer, the son of powerful Prussian politician Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer. The first letter is signed twice "Schm.", 3pp. 4to., Munster, Dec. 15, 1939 to Gen. GOTTHARD HEINRICI discussing von Schorlemer''s poor health, hospitalizations, and general lack of fitness for duty. He notes that the officer is unaware of Schmidt advocating on his behalf, and asks that something "fundamental" be done. The second letter from Schmidt is signed in full with holograph initialed postscript, 1p. 4to., Munster, Dec. 15, 1939 to a "Frau Baronin", apparently confirming that he had contacted Heinrici, no doubt on prompting by the baroness. Very good.
