Julius Schmid (1854-1935), Portrait of a Lady, circa 1900

      Est: €1,440 - €1,800

Oil on panel Austria, circa 1900 Julius Schmid (1854-1935) - Austrian painter and draftsman Signed with 'Schmid." upper right Dimensions: 32 x 22 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Sweden Brilliantly captured woman's portrait by the Viennese painter Julius Schmid. The current highest auction record for an oil painting by Schmid is approximately €20,000 Julius Schmid's portrait of a brunette lady shows a carefully painted face with rosy flesh tones and expressive brown eyes. The hairs are stuck together at the back and form fine frizzes on the forehead. The clothes and the abstracted background, in contrast, have been only indicated with a rapid brushwork. Both the style of the painting as well as the clothes of the lady refer to a time of creation of around 1900. At this time, Schmid had received the bronze medal at the Paris World Exhibition for his portrait of the Austrian writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. The painting is signed with 'Schmidt' upper right, being in good overall condition. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching to the hair and the background of the figure. The frame is slightly chipped. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 48 x 39.5 cm. The panel measures 32 x 22 cm. Julius Schmid (1854-1935) Between 1871 and 1978, Julius Schmid studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1878, he was awarded with the Rome Prize and subsequently continued his studies in Italy for two years. Upon his return, Schmid worked as a portrait and history painter in Vienna. He created ceiling frescoes and stage designs and taught at the Academy. His most famous work is the oil painting 'Schubertiade' from 1897.
