      W. SCHLOTTERBECK (*1777), Krimml Waterfall in Austria, Aquatint

      Est: €900 - €1,200

Wilhelm Friedrich Schlotterbeck (1777 Härkingen/Basel - 1819 Vienna): Krimml Waterfall in Austria with herd of cattle in the mountains, 19th century, Aquatint Technique: Aquatint on Paper Inscription: lower left signed: "WFSchlotterbeck d. & sc.". Lower middle inscribed by the artist's hand: "Krimmler Wasserfall". Date: 19th century Description: From a safe distance, we look down on the mighty masses of water, white and bubbling, tumbling down the Krimml cliffs. An impressive natural spectacle that makes us want to travel and allows us to vividly experience the greatness and unbridled power of nature. Schlotterbeck's choice of the waterfall as a motif that fascinates and attracts a wide audience must have been a conscious decision, as he was summoned from Basel to Salzburg in 1803 to artistically stage the scenic beauty of the Austrian Alps and open them up to tourists. While the Salzburg region was still outside the realm of artistic representation around 1800, interest in the city and its surroundings increased with its political rise - Salzburg and Berchtesgaden were elevated to the status of a grand duchy. Thus the series of 60 aquatint sheets of Salzburg and its sights commissioned by the publisher Tranquillo Mollo made the artist Schlotterbeck a forerunner of the artistic explorers of Salzburg and moved many other painters to get to know the beauty of their own country and to record it artistically. Keywords: Austria, nature, waterfall, rocks, atmosphere, 19th century, Classicism, Landscape, Austria, Size: Paper: 38,5 cm x 30,8 cm (15,2 x 12,1 in), Depiction: 31,0 cm x 22,0 cm (12,2 x 8,7 in)
