        Est: £1,500 - £2,000

lithographic poster, 1938, condition A; not backed, framed (Dimensions: 76cm x 114cm (30in x 45 in)) (76cm x 114cm (30in x 45 in)) Footnote: Literature: Hewitt, The Shell Poster Book, 91. Shell’s 1930s advertising targeted new audiences with the People Prefer campaign. The series showed the broad range of people that opted for Shell, including: Farmers, Film Stars, Tourists and Doctors. Here it’s the turn of the journalists and Zero’s approach clearly draws on the Surrealist movement to create a powerful image full of intrigue. Schleger, who signed most of his graphic work “Zero,” studied in Berlin and was much influenced by the Bauhaus.

Condition B+ / B: restored losses and restoration in corners and at edges; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. When the former director of the Empire Marketing Board, Sir Stephen Tallents, who had commissioned posters from Schleger in the past, began to work at the British Post Office, he called on his former employee to help create a series of informational images on how to best utilize the postal services. In this instance, Schleger toys around with sizes, a favorite technique of his, and depicts a diminutive man gazing at a huge envelope against an interesting background of dots. Instead of the address, a rhyming couplet gently reminds letter-writers to provide complete information when addressing letters.

The British branch of Martini had high standards for its advertising, and worked closely with the leading British advertising agency, W.S. Crawford, to achieve their desired results. The company's creative director, Ashley Havinden, designed several posters for Martini himself, while also selecting other talented artists, like Zero, to work on the demanding commissions. Here, Zero only suggests a glass and a bottle, showing just enough of the product label to be legible, forcing the viewer to complete the mental connection and reinforce the brand name. Est: $5,000 - $6,000

ARTIST: ZERO (Hans Schleger, 1898-1976) SIZE: 25 x 39 3/4 in./63.5 x 101 cm PRINTER: The Baynard Press. DESCRIPTION: It's time to Mind the Gap, thank you. "Rather than consign [the circle-and-bar emblem of the London Underground] to the corner of the poster as an afterthought Schleger incorporated it into the center of the design" (Crouse/Deco, p. 270). Hans Schleger, who called himself Zero, was an important figure in the history of graphic design, adhering to simplicity of concept and reduction to essentials (hence his nom de plume). Born in Germany, he allied himself with most of the precepts of Bauhaus, and exported these Modernist ideas to New York, then back to Berlin, and then London during the 1930s, when he produced many works for the London Underground and Allied propaganda. (Rail; Art Deco; London Underground)

ZÉRÓ (HANS SCHLEGER, 1898-1976) IN THE BLACKOUT / WEAR OR CARRY SOMETHING WHITE. 1943. 24 3/4x20 inches, 63x50 3/4 cm. The Baynard Press, [London.] Condition B+: diagonal tape stains in corners on verso, showing through; water stain in lower right corner; minor creases and abrasions at edges. Paper. Having lived and worked in both Berlin and New York, Hans Schleger finally settled in London in 1932. A pioneer of Modernism, he worked extensively for Shell Oil and the London Transport System, two companies that had artistically progressive sensibilities. He worked for Shell both before and after the war, creating such intriguing surrealist images as Journalists - These Men Use Shell (see Swann sale 2001 lot 68). For London Transport, he redesigned their logo and created numerous campaigns. This is one of those campaigns, from a series of at least five images, warning the British public to be safe when travelling in the dark wartime blackouts. MoMA 57.1945.

The British branch of Martini had high standards for its advertising, and worked closely with the leading British advertising agency, W.S. Crawford, to achieve their desired results. The company''s creative director, Ashley Havinden, designed several posters for Martini himself, while also selecting other talented artists, like Zero, to work on the demanding commissions. Here, Zero only suggests a glass and a bottle, showing just enough of the product label to be legible, forcing the viewer to complete the mental connection and reinforce the brand name. Condition B / B+: tape on verso along tear through upper edge into image; tears and pin holes at edges; creases and abrasions in margins and image. Paper. During the Second World War the British government wanted the public to keep use of telephone and telegraph to a minimum to ensure the lines were free when needed for war work, so they generated a series of posters to that effect. Here, Zero has wrapped the bottom of a telegraph around telephone lines. It is a somber message on a serious topic, yet he adds a little bird displaced from his roost to remind the public that hope still exists.

Condition B+: restoration along right edge; restored loss in lower right margin. One of a pair of posters, the other depicts a woman, that were intended to either work together or individually.
