        Est: $400 - $800

An infantryman looks out at the viewer to warn them of the dangers of "Loose Talk" in this 1944 WWII American propaganda poster by Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer. During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard or intercepted by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer (1897-1982) began his professional career while still in high school painting for a Chicago newspaper. He continued his studies at Ecole Des Beaux Arts as well as the School of the Art Institute, where he studied under Robert Henri. His paintings graced the covers of many of the popular magazines of the time including, Scribner's, Collier's, American Legion Monthly, Redbook, Woman's Home Companion, and Cosmopolitan. He taught at the National Academy of Design, and later at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. In 1942, he was recruited by the United States War Department as a poster artist. He created many posters with a variety of themes during the war, which are highly sought after by collectors. He also served as a portraitist for military leaders including, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton. These portraits now hang in the National War College in Washington, D.C. Schlaikjer is most known for his many recruitment posters during World War II. His academic painterly style was popular at the time and helped convey the realism of the messaging. Original Vintage WWII Poster Women's Army Corps Mine Eyes by Schlaikjer 1944

        Est: $700 - $1,000

"Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" is a 1944 WWII recruitment poster that proudly features a patriotic servicewoman atop a pastiche of air and land battles. The phrase "mine eyes have seen the glory" is a reference to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a song popular during the American Civil War that became a rallying cry during times of American patriotism. The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps was founded in 1942 in order to supplement the stateside production for the armed forces. WAAC's initially served as switchboard operators, mechanics/arms repair, and bakers. Later positions expanded to office oriented assignments and drivers. The WAAC program encountered a strong critical reaction, painting the women as, at best, taking jobs from men, and, at worst, as lesbians or consorts to servicemen. This necessitated a wide promotional campaign, which sought to portray the women as patriotic and to show them involved in the war effort. Clothing designers produced outfits based on the WAAC uniform for commercial sale. About 150,000 American women served during World War II. The division lasted until 1978, when female service-members were integrated into their corresponding areas of the armed forces. es Wilhelm Schlaikjer (1897-1982) began his professional career while still in high school painting for a Chicago newspaper. Original WWII Vintage Poster by Jes Schlaikjer - Your Red Cross Is At His Side

        Est: $500 - $800

The Red Cross was a critical part of each of America's World Wars. During the war years, the Red Cross tried to encourage people to donate to their War Fund and used posters like this one to promote their cause. This poster was created in the last two years of the war, when fighting was especially intense in the Pacific Theater. The Red Cross needed all the financial help it could get from stateside civilians to help mend injured soldiers on the bloody battlefields. President Roosevelt called The Red Cross' work at this time the "greatest single crusade of mercy in all of history." Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer (1897-1982) began his professional career while still in high school painting for a Chicago newspaper. The M1 rifle is also known as the Garard rifle, and is a semiautomatic weapon that was adopted by the US Army in 1936. Between WWII and the Korean War, over five million M1s were manufactured for the Army. This appeal, likely for War Bond puchases, shows how those funds go directly to helping soldiers overseas. Condition B+ / B: skinning in top left corner; vertical and horizontal folds; adhesive stains on verso; minor losses at edges; creases in corners. Paper. With the kind of realistic detail most often seen in the Homefront scenes by Norman Rockwell, Schlaikjer depicts a young pilot in his leather flying jacket, rising from pastel-hued clouds above a squadron of B-29 Superfortresses, B-17 Flying Fortresses, and B-26 Marauders. More romantic than war-like, he holds a bomb while looking off towards a distant, more promising future. It is patriotic in both its use of a line from the American National Anthem and proud, powerful American imagery. Zeman frontis, Pollack p. 21.

Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions along sharp vertical and horizontal folds. 21.

An infantryman looks out at the viewer to warn them of the dangers of "Loose Talk" in this 1944 WWII American propaganda poster by Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer. During the Second World War,there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard or intercepted by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer (1897-1982) began his professional career while still in high school painting for a Chicago newspaper. He continued his studies at Ecole Des Beaux Arts as well as the School of the Art Institute, where he studied under Robert Henri. His paintings graced the covers of many of the popular magazines of the time including,Scribner's,Collier's,American Legion Monthly,Redbook,Woman's Home Companion, and Cosmopolitan. He taught at the National Academy of Design, and later at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. In 1942,he was recruited by the United States War Department as a poster artist. He created many posters with a variety of themes during the war, which are highly sought after by collectors. He also served as a portraitist for military leaders including,Dwight D. Eisenhower,Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton. These portraits now hang in the National War College in Washington,D.C. Schlaikjer is most known for his many recruitment posters during World War II. His academic painterly style was popular at the time and helped convey the realism of the messaging. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Communicating to soldiers abroad was important for morale but also risky for fear of espionage. V-Mail (Victory Mail) is promoted as a safe and secure way to send letters in this 1942 WWII poster by Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer. V-Mail entailed the use of transmitting letters to microfilm and consolidating them on a single reel. The reel would be shipped overseas to be enlarged, printed, and distributed. This allowed for considerable space to be saved on carrier planes for equipment and other items, and also reduced costs of shipping the mail.
