Edward M. Schiwetz Sold at Auction Prices

Water colorist, Illustrator, b. 1898 - d. 1983

Born in Texas in 1898, artist Edward Muegge Schiwetz, also called Buck, was first artistically influenced by his mother's pencil drawings. A second artist, Mary Louise Gramann, inspired Schiwetz with her painting on china. This can be seen in the careful strokes in Cabin in the Woods, which was painted by the 12-year-old Schiwetz as he captured his Texas surroundings. Subsequent training would come as the artist moved around Texas, with study under Gary Cahoon, an advertising artist, and John Doctoroff. While living in New York, the artist Edward Schiwetz studied at the Art Students League. He began selling his work, and Schiwetz drawings appeared in House Beautiful, Scribner's, Pencil Points, and Pictorial Review. His return to Texas reignited his love for the state, and Schiwetz paintings of Texas oil fields, coastlines, and buildings reflected his changing style, including the use of watercolor.
