      Harald Valdemar Immanuel Schiodte (Danish, 1852-1924). "Boating Party" oil on board, ca. 1880s. An intriguing genre painting by Danish artist Harald Schiodte depicting an Orientalist composition of a boating party with one figure donning fez and serving sea while a musician strums a lute or lyre to entertain the crowded guests. Harald Schiodte specialized in painting genre scenes that demonstrate the influence of notable artists of the Romantic Movement such as Christen Dalsgaard, Julius Exner, and Frederik Vermehren. Following his studies in Copenhagen, Schiodte traveled extensively and eventually settled in Munich. Genre painting like Schiodte's "Boating Party" was the most popular form of Orientalist art during the 19th century and was largely influenced by artists' unforgettable travel experiences. A special painting by Schioedte mounted in a custom frame that is fit with a brass plaque identifying the artist. The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Schiödte is more than €17,000 Condition: The painting is in good condition with two small losses of paint to the dress of the pianist and minor abrasions along the edges. The inspection under UV light reveals scattered small areas of retouching throughout the depiction and major touch-ups to the girl's dress. The gilt period frame is only minimally worn. The dimensions of the stretcher are 68 x 60 cm, and the frame is 88 x 79 cm in size. Valdemar I. H.
