Ausstellungskatalog: Markus Schinwald, Kunstverein Hannover/ Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, Verlag für Moderne Kunst, 2011 Markus Schinwald does with old paintings what up to now has been familiar only with regard to architecture: he remodels them. Whereas buildings over the course of their history are quite self-evidently enlarged, partly torn down, or at least altered in their inner partitioning, there exists a deep respect with regard to unknown paintings; except for measures of restoration, very few changes are undertaken. Instead their original form is supposed to be preserved or recreated. But Schinwald purchases or acquires at auctions pictures mostly from the nineteenth century and proceeds at least in part to overpaint them and to add additional subiects to them. He alters paintings which "do not fit the climate of our time," he says, in such a way "that they can exist under contemporary conditions." The paintings to which Schinwald turns his attention portray various people. But he transforms a conventional, bourgeois portrait into the depiction of a person whose body seems to be regulated, or even deformed, by special apparatuses. Belts and bands tighten the face, a mouth guard or bandages cover parts of it, the figures appear to be constricted or reduced to certain possibilities of action. Sometimes one feels pity for the person who has been subjected to this deformation, but occasionally the intervention simply looks absurd or comical. Oil on canvas, 2006, unsigned. 28 3/4 x 23 3/4 in., 31 1/4 x 26 (frame). Note: Austrian interdisciplinary artist Markus Schinwald creates mysterious and unsettling works through the manipulation and transformation of figures and environments. In his portrait work, as here, he alters 19th century paintings by painting bandages, splints and wires on to the faces. Schinwald has said of this work that he wants to "address contemporary issues and at the same time look at art history." The artist has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Digital pigment print on cardboard, laid on Forex board Austria/USA, 2003 Markus Schinwald (b. 1973) - Austrian artist Unique piece Dimensions: 90 x 60 cm Mounted behind glass in a black wooden frame: 93.5 x 63 cm Very good condition Exhibition: Galerie Georg Kargl, Vienna (label on the reverse) In his work, Schinwald deals with space and body on a psychological level. Buried in the depths of the subconscious, he turns inside out the irrational discomfort of the individual or collective consciousness in a wide variety of media and materials. In so doing, Schinwald examines the identity of the individual not only with regard to its instability and mutability, but also as to its definition as a cultural construct. Condition: The work is in very good condition, showing only minor wear to the frame. The dimensions are 90 x 60 cm, while the frame measures 93.5 x 63 cm. Markus Schinwald (b. 1973) Born in Salzburg, Schinwald originally worked in the fashion field, before he devoted himself to the creation of art. In addition to the medium of painting and drawing, he worked in the fields of photography, video and performance. His favorite subjects are portraits, which he covers with loops, masks, jewelry or halters. Often, the sitters are depicted in confined spaces and perform unnatural acts. Schinwald finds inspiration for his motifs in the field of opera and entertainment, as well as the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud. He follows the theory that a mental state is manifested externally. Schinwald lives and works in New York and Vienna. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
