Wilhelm Schimmel 1817 - 1890 was a German immigrant wood carver that arrived in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley in the 1860s.  Schimmel traded his work for lodging and food within the German and Scotch-Irish community. Schimmel used a folding pocket knife to whittle wood into dramatic sculptures. Schimmel was a pugilist drunkard that found himself spending a year in jail in 1869 for Assault with Intent to Kill and Assault and Battery. His student Aaron Mountz continued carving into the early 20th century. The spread wing eagle measures 16 inches tall by 18 3/8 inches wide by 11 3/8 inches long. The base is 5 3/8 inches wide by 5.5 inches long.

Wilhelm Schimmel rare figure of a tiger

        Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Wilhelm Schimmel (Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania 1817 - 1890), rare large carved and painted pine figure of a tiger devouring a soldier, the jagged-toothed tiger is holding an unfortunate victim in his jaws, 5 1/2" h. x 10 1/2" l. The hapless human was Hector Sutherland Munro, who was hunting on Saugur Island in West Bengal in 1793. The subject matter is unique as this is atypical of Schimmel, whose art was typically of local animals and pets. This horrific event fascinated people both in Europe and America. The Sultan of Mysore, who had little love of the British, celebrated the event by having a life-size tiger devouring Munro built with mechanical devices to simulate screams and roars. This device is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Staffordshire potteries produced pearlware figures to commemorate the event. It is most likely that Schimmel saw one of these representations somewhere in his travels of rural Pennsylvania, and desired to duplicate the figure in his unique manner. The present tail is a faithful replacement. Provenance: Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords, Sotheby's, New York, October 28 & 29, 2004, private collector. Competitive in-house shipping is available for this lot.

        Oct. 31, 2020

WILHELM SCHIMMEL Handcarved Painted Folk Art 16.75 Wingspan Pine American Eagle

        Est: $12,000 - $16,000

Historic Americana Wilhelm Schimmel Hand-Carved & Painted American Eagle Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890), Hand-carved and Painted Pine patriotic American Spread Wing Eagle, attributed to German-born wood carver of Cumberland Valley, PA., Large 16.75" Wingspan, Very Fine. This authentic Hand-carved Pine and Painted American Eagle, measures 9.5" tall with a 4" wide base and large approximately 16.75" wide wingspan. being hand-painted in muted red, green, tan, and brown colors with some natural wood still apparent as intended. This impressive larger size Schimmel atributed American Eagle is unsigned as always, in pleasing condition with some minor handling, a 1" chip of the outer wood of its base hidden from view in back with some light rub to its highpoints of the head and breast. The Eagle's mouth and break are sharply carved and distinctive, as made. Prior Wilhelm Schimmel carved examples we have offered include EAHA Auction, February 14, 2009, Lot 546, a small 5.5" tall Eagle which brought $5,605 and a carved Rooster, measuring 7" tall which sold for $7,000 purchased from our online Early American History Store in 2013. In October 2018 a Midwest auction house sold a smaller near identical Schimmel attributed carved Eagle measuring 5" tall with a 8" wingspan, which hammered at $7,500 (having having some paint loss and old putty added to the wing joints). A rare large Wilhelm Schimmel Hand-carved American Eagle, considered a "key" example in museum quality which have greatly appreciated in collector market value in recent years. William Schimmel was a German-born wood carver who tramped through the Cumberland Valley near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, often staying in jails and almshouses. His only occupation was carving heads of animals out of soft pine, which he would sell for a few pennies each. Reportedly he had a very surly disposition. He became the first of four important Cumberland County carvers, specializing in large, dramatic, colorful eagles. Schimmel's eagles have both smooth and crosshatched bodies, and many of his carvings are on display at the Winterthur Museum and the Cumberland County Historical Society. (Source: Sotheby's New York.) The American Eagle was a favorite theme for carvers, including one of the most noted Folk sculptors of the 19th century, Wilhelm (1817-1890). Schimmel's Eagles vary in size from mere inches to several feet. Eagles were his signature pieces, but Schimmel is also known for representations of other animals such as roosters, parrots and lions.
