JAKUB SCHIKANEDER (Czech / Bohemian 1855 - 1924) - By the sick one

      Est: -

technique: charcoal on paper | 42 x 31 cm | signature: monogram lower right | note: Probate stamp on back | framed under glass Lot description Jakub Schikaneder, an important Czech painter, known for his melancholic and sensitive depictions of everyday life, turns to the theme of deep human emotionality in this work. The work expresses an intimate and compassionate view of the moments when a mother watches over her sick child. The soft, dim candlelight creates an atmosphere of calm and anxiety at the same time, while the clock in the background symbolizes the inexorable flow of time. Schikaneder was a master of working with light and shadow, thus underlining the moodiness and emotionality of his scenes. This charcoal drawing is a typical example of his ability to capture melancholy and compassion, while also reflecting the influence of Symbolism and Art Nouveau Realism that dominated European art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The work depicts not only the care of a mother, but also broader themes such as fear, hope and anxiety associated with human frailty. Schikaneder's paintings, like this one, resonate with their humanity and ability to convey deep emotion through minimalist yet expressive scenes.

SCHIKANEDER Jakub (27. 2. 1855 Prague - 15. 11. 1924 Prague) Evening mood Oil on wood, 17,5 x 31 cm, framed, glazed, undated, signed with the monogram lower right. Appraised by PhDr. Vlcek. This painting shows the artist's characteristic combination of Impressionist treatment of form and Symbolist subjects and poetics. The evening atmosphere is rendered by gradation of spectral colours. The female figure is watching the horizon, the painter uses the motif of ""Ruckenfigur"" - figures with their backs turned to the spectator, well-known from the works of the Romantic painters - e.g. C. D. Friedrich. PROPERTY OF A EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTOR JACOB SCHIKANEDER CZECH, 1855-1924 RIVER AT DAWN

      Est: £35,000 - £45,000

signed JSchikaneder l.l. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Acquired by the family of the present owner circa 1930; thence by descent CATALOGUE NOTE Schikaneder trained at the Academies of Prague (1870-78) and Munich (1878-80). During the 1880s and 1890s he established himself as a painter of genre. The brooding, melancholy mood that often pervaded these early works carried through into the more diffuse nocturnes for which he is now best known. The present work is typical of these twilight views, characterised by a sense of wide open space, isolated light sources punctuating the all-enveloping darkness, and the occasional figure to emphasise the mood of loneliness. The mood conveyed has strong resonances with Czech fin de siècle literature of the period, including the novels of Franz Kafka.
